I just got a CampingGaz 12V cooler, and am surprised at the roar of the fan. Even allowing for keeping the thing outside the tent, I can't imagine my neighbours would be very impressed. Do they all make this racket?
unfortunately a lot are ,the idea is the more air that passes over the heatsink the colder the other side gets.
we have an old camping gaz cooler and it is noisier than our other two it seems to be the design of the fan and intake hole.
if its definately a fan/air noise then there isnt much you can do but we noticed on ours the fan over time moves on the shaft and quietly scrapes the casing making it noisy.if the fan isnt positioned correctly on yours simply move it up or down the shaft (applies to both fans) a fraction with thin nosed pliers.
i use the camping gaz one for my bait the mrs refuses to have "smelly" worms in her fridge for some reason.
the good thing about the camping gaz version is it switches off if your car battery gets low ,hers flattens it
if you use a 12v transformer check with another yours is not giving out more than 13ish volts ,if its quieter on another your transformer may be faulty.

Same here - nice to know if anyone has a near silent unit ?
my mrs has a mobicool made "proper" fridge (its like a little fridge with opening front doot etc) its so quiet you cant hear it and unlike some others its got a thermostat that stops it acting like a deep freeze in the colder months!
when we take the TT we use a 3 way fridge which is silent bar the odd gurgle (its too big for the car to take on non TT trips)
on our first trip in the first week of april the cooler blocks we use in transit were still frozen after a week in the bait fridge! ok for mackeral for bait! bad for milk
No we have the Igloo Koolmate 40 and it is whisper quiet can hardly hear it and it keeps all food and drink ice cold, I think it is probably one of the best on the market.
I've just got some technii ice chillerz - hoping that this will be enough to keep the box cool overnight so that we only have to run it through the day. Also hoping the campsites in France have the facilities to refreeze it when it defrosts.
Gonna do some 'testing' of how long it stays frozen for in a day or two.
Igloo Koomate 40 - consistent with earlier comment, very quiet, just a low hum, no buzzing/whirring. I do find that it can get too cold overnight and can freeze things, so I tend to turn it off at bedtime and on again first thing, so even if it was noisy it wouldnt bother anyone trying to sleep. As long as the lid has been closed all night then it holds the cool temperature fine.
Incase you are thinking of buying one, the Igloo chills to a lower temp than most 12v coolers, I think it is an extra 4 or 5 (?) degrees lower than ambient compared to others, hence higher risk of freezing overnight, but better during summer days for meat/fish/dairy. Im sure others can confirm the temperature numbers if you need to know.
Alison.
