Can anyone help - I have had an ERDE 122 for 2 years now and I have previously put the safety chain over the towball. I have now read that it should be secured on the towing bracket. I have a new car and new towbar fitted I would just like to know if the safety chain can be easily removed to be fastened around a towin bracket. If not I guess I can get some chain and some kind of secure linkage, padlock but any suggestions on chain type/strength and lock/fixing would be great !

Thanks in advance

Dave

On my towbar there is a steel plate that is sandwiched between the towbal and the bar itself. I then padlock the safety chain to this plate rather than attaching it to the towball. Have a look here its called a breakaway plate

There is a differance between a breakaway cable and a safety chain which is what you have on the erde trailer this chain is designed to keep your trailer attached to the towcar if the trailer hitch fails where as the breakaway cable is designed to pull your trailer/caravan brakes on if they should detach from the tow vehicle and is not designed to hold trailer/caravan on your towcar, breakaway cable should be attached to either a bracket or around the tow bar and not the towball. Chain goes around the towball
