I would really appreciate your advice. I know I sound like a donkey, but I wondered how fellow campers with trailers and roof boxes load their gear. I understand about trailer weight and that it should be loaded heavy stuff over wheels towards front.

Hubby was going to load tent, poles, canopy , wellies in trailer (well within max weight), Tables, chairs in roof box and bedding/clothes. In boot gas bottle ,, cooker food.

Any tips would be really appreciated, then I can tactfully and casually suggest Hubby re organise his gear!

Thankyou so much

Alex x

I have the same queries myself, had our first camping experience loading up my Ford Mondeo, it all went in for a weekend, but am now looking into a either a roof rack or trailer to transport our gear for a weeks trip.

So i will be watching your message for helpful replies.

Good Luck n happy camping

Doesn't sound much wrong with that to me.

Sleeping bags, pillows and sleeping mats/airbeds are good roofbox fillers.

Try to keep the tent somewhere that you can get to it easily when you get on site.

My rule of thumb is trailer gets the heavy bulky stuff, roofbox gets the light bulky stuff, the boot gets the kit bags, valuables (camera bags) and the fridge that I don't want bouncing round the trailer.

yes just to add to what Piglet wrote, I find that it is easier to fill the roof box with all the squashy things so clothes, sleeping bags etc go up there. If you put tables in the roof box you end up with wasted space

Rigid and square shaped things generally go in the boot so tables, cooker, fridge etc goes in there

Tent goes in the trailer. Never put clothes and bedding in the trailer in case it rains very hard and it all gets wet

We load slightly differently. We put all our equipment ( cooker, tables, airbeds, chairs etc) in the trailer including all our bags. Sleeping bags and other light squashy things go in the roofbox and the tent and poles go in the boot of the car. That way we can at least get the tent up without having to open either the trailer or the roofbox if its raining. Once the tent is up we can quickly empty the roofbox and then we empty the trailer. My rrofbox is actually mounted on top of the trailer so we have a specific routine to go through when pitching and the reverse when breaking the pitch.

go easy on the weight in your roofbox - it makes your car drive like a sack of spuds if you over do it. I do it like everyone above, bedding in roofbox (wrapped in waterproof bags), Tent & hardwears in the trailer (heavy in the bottom, light on top) & clothing/valuables in the boot.

Interesting, we find our tables sit quite nicely at the bottom of the roofbox - pre-trailer we had to put them in the box as my lovely posh table wouldn't fit in the boot!

I guess it depends on your kit and the shape of your box.

Light bulky stuff works for me .
Although I don't usually put bedding in case it leaks.

I'm amazed that people need both a roof box and trailer.

My Mondeo does have a big boot - I like the fact that apart from slinging clothes/food (& family) in the car, it's just a case of hooking up the trailer.

I suspect if you have a smaller car boot then your likely to be loading on the roof ?

I can only fit a little erde down the alley to my backyard, so I need a roofbox to compensate for an inaducate (spell checker please ) trailer.

Yep, heavy stuff inthe trailor, light in the roofbox and fridge, food and clothes in the boot. We have also just fitted our roof box on top of the trailor, haven't tried it out yet.

Yep thats what I do as well.  The roofbox on the trailer I have found is the best option as well.

"I'm amazed that people need both roof box and trailer" john steven bat quote.

The only 'amazing' thing about camping is that camping bargains and childrens in- tent entertainment (toys)  never stop coming. We're only in our 2nd year and have accumulated soooo much stuff. We have a mondeo car two tall children and adults and have just had enough of being cramped in the car!

No fun spending three hours in transit with head touching car ceiling and a electric cooler between my legs! It was either loose two stones inweight or get a trailer!

Thanks again x
