 Hi Martijn,

It sounds as if either the vapo tube is not hot enough or badly worn. If in fact you heated it for 2 minutes then I Think that would have been long enough.

Try the new vapourising tube. When you light up again heat the tube for as long as possible, only give the pump a few strokes before opening the cock. once lit pump up the pressure slowly. Using too much pressure at the start could also cause the problem you describe.

 Good luck and Happy Camping

Frank & Kathy

Hi Frank & Kathy,

I think I started the wrong way. I may have drowned the vapo tube which wasn't hot enough. I'm waiting for my order from the UK with new washers. I'll dismantle the whole thing and replace the vapo tube too. Then I'll try again.

I'll let you all know.

Martijn, e mail me and I will send you the lighting instructions. If it was yellow and smoking it sounds like too much pressure.

Hi Advent,

I have a vapalux lamp as well.
As you probably know already, they are made in Halifax.

I'm just wondering what Mantle you use in yours.
I can get then from the manufacturer at £1-50 each, but have never seen them in the high street shops.
Last time I needed one I fitted the tilley mantle instead, and it works just as good as the vapalux mantle. It is also cheaper at £1-00.

Hi all,

I got my spares from Surplus and Outdoors last week and finally had the time to use them. I replaced the vapo tube and the burner unit with new ones (I had them already), replaced the washers where needed, new leather and fitted a new mantle.
I heated for a long time and tried to lit the Tilley. At first it didn't seem to work, but after a while and after some pumping (new leather didn't work at first) it went burning!! It didn't burn that bright as I hoped for. From closeby I could easily stare into the light. Is this normal? Picture will follow.

Everybody thanks for all the help. Couldn't have done it without you.

Hi Martijn, your Tilley is obviously still not working correctly.  Can't stare directly at mine when close by.  Sounds like the heater tube is blocked or there is not enough pressure.  Try turning it on and off a few times, the needle in the tube should clear any blockage, then try lighting it again.  Sorry can't be of any more help.

Hi Breez,

I already tried the on/off trick a few times without result. I think the pressure doesn't build up as it should. Maybe it's the new leather I mounted. I'll try again tonight, maybe the leather has settled and soaked a little by then.

Later.

HI Tilley Lovers!  Long time, no vapourise.

Still loving my lamp and, until yesterday, still on the hunt for something to transport it in. But then we found it.  In Maplin.  It is a flight case for cds (for DJ types, I presume) and when I saw it I thought it looked about right (had previously looked at it on the Maplin website but they didn't give the dimensions).  It was £15 (reduced by £10) so we thought it was worth the risk.  Last night, did some minor modifications and although it is a little bit tight (a gnat's whatsit), it is great.  So just had to share my excitement with you all.  Here is the link, but the picture is not too good.  I would send a photo of mine, but I don't know how to do that. If somebody can tell me how to download a photo onto these boards I will do it (I have my own website but don't know how to work that either!  Hopeless!)

Hi GW, 'necessity the mother of invention'... classic case of something being adapted for something other than it's original use. Good one.

I intend to make my own padded lamp cases for the Tilley and the Coleman... I thought that after 35 years it's about time I made some use of my technical drawing and woodwork 'O'levels.

You can purchase a fully restored Tilley Lamp or a Tilley Lamp base to build your own here. Would be great to hear from anyone interested.

Welcome to UKCS. Thanks for the Tilly update, always useful.
I wonder how many of the people who posted on this thread 20 years ago are still around? It would be interesting to know…

I know nothing about Tilley lamps, but as Fiona says, it would be interesting to know how many "oldies" are still around. Saw Friend of Owls when looking up details of a site and wondered what happened to her (think it was her).

I still have one in my garden shed. We used them when I was in the scouts but they went out of fashion in the 60's when Campingaz, in those days known as Bluet, introduced portable gas lanterns.
