I am going to be brave in the next week or two and take my daughters away, by myself in my Royal La Rochelle !!! Normally I have done it with the back up of my parents in their caravan (for all those added luxuries!) but dad died last year so I am 'going it alone' Thinking of a site with loos and showers, only for 2/3 nights. All i have is chairs, one of those canister table top single ring cooker things, water carrier and cups and plates - oh and two really uncomfortable airbeds. What else do I need? can you get storage things to hand on tent poles inside and is that advisable? Windbreak for privacy and shelter ?? Have an estate car but no trailer so no huge expensive items. Is a heater a good idea and if so what 'wiring' (sorry!!) wld I need? I have camped all my childhood but honestly never paid much attention to what was needed and it was 20 odd years ago !!

With children around I'd recommend you get a kitchen tent, something like the outhouse sold on this site.  It also gives you somewhere to store all your gear out of the rain (bikes, swingball etc.)  A big lidded plastic box to put all your food in to stop the mice foxes etc eating it and get a decent airbed if you want a good nights sleep.  A small folding table to eat off is easier than balancing off knees or eating on a rug on the ground.  Heating isn't necessary in summer I'm sure you will be fine with a blanket on top of your sleeping bag at night so you don't need to worry about hook up.  Something to keep food cool, lots of sites will freeze your iceblocks if you've got a coolbag or box which is easiest but best to check with sites first.

Hi Louise & welcome to the forum

Click here for a checklist of equipment. You don't have to buy sleeping bags for your first trip, just take your duvets from home. You can also take saucepans & cutlery from home. Don't forget your pillows. You really do need comfortable airbeds though - one which most people on here recommend is the Coleman Comfort. You will also need a table to stand the cooker on & to prepare meals.

As for hanging storage pockets from the tent poles - it depends on what type of tent you've got. You can hang things from the poles in a frame tent, but most of the synthetic tents have the poles on the outside of the flysheet, so no chance. You could buy some of the plastic storage boxes.

I never go camping without a tub of baby wipes!!! My daughter is eight now but if she eats an ice lolly/gets a bit mucky/I find i need to freshen my hands or face; I just use the baby wipes rather than run to the loos!!

Also...remember to take something to do if it is raining such as playing cards, colouring books etc...nothing worse than bored children!

Netto have windbreaks which fold really small for £3.99 each - well worth the money..

Enjoy your trip and you are braver than me!! Have never had the guts to drive abroad!!

I personally would get sleeping bags - I bought my kids' sleeping bags from Halfords for £9.99 each and have been quite happy with them. Friends of ours took duvets last year and had to replace them when they got home as they got so dirty (very expensive to get duvets cleaned).

I would also take a plastic backed picnic blanket, some pillow cases to fill with clothes, towels etc and use as pillows. Solar lamp from the garden, solar torch, glow sticks from £1 shop for kids. Washing up liquid, sponge and teatowel. Pack the teabags - just incase they don't sell your favorite brand. Also marmite, ketchup, squash.

You don't have to have a table to put stove on (I cooked on the floor when camping last week), however a metal windbreak around the stove saves wasting gas and cooks quicker.

Thanks to you all for your input - I put the tent up in th e garden on Friday - just to practise ! and am now waiting for it to rain so I can see if its still waterproof after my eldest daughter took it to a party year before last!!!. It seems ok, and have wiped off the mud with a damp cloth (no detergent.)

Making a short list of what to take, aiming for 2 /3 nights away and not too far away (sorry 'themummy' La Rochelle is the name of the tent! I too would be terrified of driving abroad!)Think I will get a small table - any ideas of where to get it from, and a new airbed for me - I've read that colemans are good.

Was thinking of Dorset for first trip solo - or New Forest - but have been reading of their high prices per night. Does anyone have any recommendations - somewhere small, quiet, with loos, and preferable not too many caravans !!

I wouldn't trust ordering a table on the internet if you are planning a holiday soon - might have to wait. Robert Dyas will be selling tables and apparently Millets has a sale on at the moment. Wilkinsons is also good for camping stuff. Also try Woolies and Argos.

Re Campsite. Where are you? Lots of sites are now fully booked - so you might not get a good choice. We've just been to Wicks Farm, West Wittering which is nice - but think that one will be booked up. Norwood Farm, New Romney, Kent is lovely and might have places. Not overpriced and you can use their fridges and freezers f.o.c. Check the campsite search above and Good Luck.

We are just south of Stratford upon avon in Midlands so any where around 2 hrs drive is fine. I am limited with when we can go - either 12-14 or 28 - 31 Aug, Admittedly a bit a forward planning earlier in the summer wld have been a good idea !!

We have a Robert Dyas and Millets in Stratford so will toddle off down there Monday morning!!

I bought a cheap table from Woolies a couple of years ago and it's done very well. It's not waterproof so have to remember not to leave it out at night and it doesn't have levelling feet but it only cost me less than a tenner so it's fine!

Location wise how about somewhere in the Wye Valley or similar rather than having to trek down the M5 past Bristol over the summer? There are also some nice looking sites around the Kennet and Avon Canal around Trowbridge area.    We went up to Gloucester yesterday and teh traffic around Bristol was queued back for 14 miles!!

We're about to do our first camping trip too! Bought a folding table in Woolworths last week for £9.99 and it seems sturdy enough.

I had a browse in Woolworths and all camping stuff has gone !!! But Robert Dyas are doing a table for 9.99 which I think will be ok until we are a bit more experienced. Have booked the site - we are going to Woodlands Camping Park wareham, dorset - nice and quiet, good reviews so fingers crossed!! Going 28 - 31st Aug. Not too sure if I am looking forward to it !!!
