hi there, just a quickie, my father-in-law has just bought a caravan (we camp) and is looking for a lcd tv, most 15 inch have a drop down converter from 240v to 12v. He has been talked into parting with£200 for an elleged tv especially for a caravan made by Vech-line, he is having trouble with it, and is thinking of returning it. My question is would a normal lcd tv be ok, he is talking about power surges when on 12v. Can anyone help?
my van has NO EHU so I use 12 volt for my tv, I bought a 15 inch LCD TV from Asda for £120, on the back is a 12 volt dc socket, I then bought a voltage stabiliser from Amperor Direct for £43 and the 2 together work great.
I tried it without the stabiliser and it didn't work. You need the stabiliser to stop the power surges.
I was told if the screen is under 13 inches you don't need the stabiliser but i don't know how true this is as both myself and my mum and dad have the 15inch screens
I got one of these voltage regulators for our LCD, it works a treat and also for charging / running MP3 players as well, you just set the voltage and the current and away you go it also means your not limited to LCD TV`s that run at 12v
ASDA....... we bought a LCD tv from ASDA 18 months ago with a built in dvd, now as a rule it runs from 240V through a adaptor but if you read the info you find out it is in fact 12V, simple,,, buy the right conections ,cut out the transformer (12V only) and use it as either 240V or 12V It was also about half the price of any other TV DVD combo we saw at only £149.99 what a steel. The make by the way was ALBA .

WE use an LCD from Woolworths. 14" cost 99 pounds. We use it on 12 volts, just plug straight in in place of the 12 volt PSU. WE don't use a stabiliser and it's not damaged our set. The TV goes into standby if the battery voltage drops too low. The LCD tv will work after the digital switchover, but if it doesn't have a digital tuner, will need a separate Freeview or satellite decoder.
Been using the Alba 15" LCD?DVD combo (from Argos £169) on 12v for three months now now probs as yet, made up the 12v line with the plug the socket to the tv is a 2.5mm usually sold at meets for about £2.99, cut the cigarette end off and solder the 12v plug on, presto working tv, I purchased a bracket from Tesco to hang of the cupboard wall with a plate behind to stop it pulling trough, it has stayed there for over 2000k miles of the French trip. If anyone is interested the sat nav I used is the TomTom One Europe, works well all the way down the south of France, as so did the Maxview 66m manual satellite dish (Emmerdale etc for wife).
Had a great time, going again asap (when funds allow)
