I am shortly to change to the vehicle of my dreams for camping.  Husband at last is allowing me the purchase of a range rover.  Now this lenant me towards the idea of having a new trailer. But, not knowing alot about them I have a few questions.

Firstly, having a grandad right driving licence I know i don't need to sit a test for it and have had plenty of practice round the farm with my vectra and have taken a erde 102 camping ande found it too small for all our stuff,  even tho' it does fit all in the boot of the vectra!! So I know i need a bigger trailer.

Secondly what difference will I notice, if any with a trailer with 2 axles, my son has been telling me that if anything it will make reversing and manouvering alot better.

Could any veteran of towing please advise me.

And please keep the jokes about ladies towing to a minimum my husband cannot reverse it to save his life LOL

Hi Kareen,

See from your profile that you are in Nottingham, I myself am in Stoke. I bought a new trailer about 3 years ago from a local trailer manufacturer (Hanford Trailers, Tel 01782 658594) in Stoke on Trent, they make to order wide and offer a wide range of sizes. mine is 5' long x 4' wide x 2' deep and paid £350, much better than ones in Halfords and B&Q, could not do without it holds a fair bit of kit.

Good Luck.

i tow an erde 122 with a discovery. forget it's there sometimes.

i say a 122 but it has been self modified with bespoke metal side extensions to make it 24 cuft (4x3x2). we find this ample.

if i was abit more wise in the beginning, i would have opted for the 142, and possibly altered it as and when.

certainly no need for multi axle.

have a look on ebay, there are always plenty on there.

I use an Erde 122 with a abs hard top and load bars fitted and a roof box on top of that. Holds loads but i still put a 450ltr roofbox on the top of my Jeep too. You never seem to have enough space for your kit, even when you do you end up filling it with more kit. Then you need more space again.. catch 22 eh lol..

I wouldn't want a twin axle trailer, a nice light one does me. petrol costs loads when you have a 4ltr jeep that drinks lol

My Erde 122 with abs hard top load bars and roofbox.

I personally like a trailer with 13in wheels, We went for the Brendup 1150s with the extra sides. Great trailer, very easy towing.

We have the same set up as Delta but it's a 142. OH has also adapted the front by adding a storage box for the gas. We fined it's not just useful for towing the gear, the gear lives in there all the time. Just store it in the garage during the winter months.

Got a Daxara 158 here, came with spare wheel, jockey wheel, secondary suspension, side extenders and ABS hardtop for £300 as it needed a wheel bearing (£15 for set) . Retail would be close on £1500, keep an eye on Ebay etc as you can get some very good bargains on trailers. Go for the biggest trailer you can as they do not take long to fill.

we have the daxara 157 and abs lid

I'd recommend you pick the trailer you think is the right size, then buy the next one up

We have the Brenderup 1205S with the ABS hardtop (bought with wedding present money - strange us, no?!), which replaced the Franc trailer that we had. How we laughed at the huge capacity of the Brenderup when we picked it up, we'll never fill that we said....

...Our Christmas present to each other this year will be high sides for the Brenderup

We tend to mainly get away at weekends and having a big trailer means that we can leave all the kit packed in the trailer in the garage and just pull it out, add food bags, kit bags and bedding and just go. It's made a huge difference to the enjoyment of short trips and tows beautifully.

Hi,

You should check ebay for cheaper trailers, picked mine up for £42, Have repainted and added new timber, but only because we wanted to tidy up, not because needed. Saved me £00s and the best bit is there are usually so many, your spoilt for choice.

Hi,

Daxara 158 with extension sides did the trick for us this summer. Without the high sides we still needed the roof box - which then caused problems at car parks with height barriers. The high sides were a dream (can take even more stuff now - like my daughter's bike).

alot of people rave about the side extensions, me also.

the trick is to get the trailer of your choice, use it, and if the need arises then modify.

i looked at a number of options with mine, abs lid, extended frame and cover but all in my opinion espensive for what you got. (£70 +)

i made crude drawings and measurements and took them down to my local metal benders. after explaining my needs they made what i wanted.

bolted to the trailer with reinforced corner and side braces i increased my load carrying capacity by 75% for less than half the price of the chepest option.i even added a small metal toolbox to the front to carry ratchet straps etc.

i now have a very usable trailer with strong, long lasting sides.
