We have 2 x 11kg Gaslow refillable bottles in the front of the caravan. They are connected so that both are filled simultaneously, but when we use the gas we connect to only one bottle, manually disconnecting and reconnecting when switching bottles. What we are thinking about doing is using the bottle that isn't in use to fuel a bbq, such as a Cadac or Beauclaire. A couple of questions if anyone can help.......autogas is propane, any problems using this? Does it matter what length of hose you use? We don't want to cook butted up to the caravan or the van could get splashed with fat, so we're thinking of a couple of metres or so away. Can anyone see any problems with using our setup as described. Or is there another way of connecting a bbq that would be better, without taking another separate gas bottle.
First i would like to say we have a Cadac and cant fault it. I have one bottle of propane and one of butane and dont notice any difference when changing from one to the other. As far as the hose lenght goes i have been told that it should be no longer than 3 metres but not sure if thats gossble
We have used our Cadac from our refillable cylinders for 4 years now - fantastic results. Regarding hose length, we have 4 mtr which gives lots of flex when setting up the barby. I believe regulations now prevent retailers selling hose longer than 1 mtr, but speak VERY nicely
Are you saying you refill your gas bottles at the autogas pump on a petrol station forecourt at 48.4p a litre meaning that it costs you about a fiver to fill up each one which is a fraction of the cost that the rest of us pay to for a refill Campingaz or Calor Gas bottle (holding significantly less gas unless you go for the 15kg Calor Gas at about £21)?
We bought the Cadac easy chef last week and the instrutions say to use 1.5m of hose, I personally dont think this is long enough especially if attaching hose to the connection outlet on the side of van..... far too close especially with awning on, the only alternative is to take a extra bottle of gas to use away from van which I didn't want to do ..... lnot used Cadac yet, but from comments on here how good they are I'm sure we won't be disappointed...
What length of hose do you have.... and any comments
Yes, yes, yes and yes, that is exactly what we do! The caravan came with refillable gas already fitted as the previous owner wanted it that way. I can't advise you on fitting costs, but running gas is very cheap for us. It is also very easy to fill up - no carrying heavy bottles around. Just pull up at the petrol forecourt. It also means that we can fill up regularly to make sure we always have full bottles before a holiday.
Cadac owners rave about the Cadac, but this business with the hose is a bit dubious. We don't want to cook so close to the van, but equally don't want to use a longer length if there is a reason why you shouldn't use a longer length. A bit more research me thinks.
Thank you Jane that's very interesting. I run the car on autogas so I curse Campingaz/Calor Gas for the amount they charge for refills. I had a look at the Gaslow website; the initial cost of the refillable bottles has to be weighed against the amount of gas used but the idea of just topping up when I'm in the garage does appeal - especially at under 50p a litre.
Not sure about hose length. When you think about it the distance from the tank to the engine on a car can be a fair length so just the distance itself doesn't seem relevant. Presumably it's something to do with the pressure and robustness of the hose itself. When I've bought the rubber type hose for a camping cooker or the garden barbecue I've been asked what length is required with no mention of restriction. Hopefully someone far more technically adept than me can help with this.
Talking of Gaslow, I recently had a problem with the regulator (a common problem it seems whereby the rubber hoses leach an oily residue that clogs the regulator). Anyway, we've resolved it for good now by investing in stainless steel hoses. But the company themselves were fantastic, or at least the men in the warehouse where I went and purchased the things from (we are local to them in Loughborough). They couldn't have been more helpful and went out of their way to make sure we got a solution that didn't cost the earth.
Pete, don't forget that you can move the refillable system to another van, so the initial outlay may be spread over several years if you choose to carry on caravanning. If you are regular caravanners who use sites without EHU and therefore use alot more gas, then it is something to think about.
I use the MTH portable refillable cylinders. I've had 2 for about 6 years and they have paid for themselves over and over again. You can see the fluid level as they are translucent and you need never run out of gas. When the level gets low just pop the cylinder in the car and top up at 48p per ltr at any autogas filling station. Richard Cecil runs MTH and their service is brilliant. Their website is www.mthautogas.co.uk.
I'm no expert but I believe the issue with the hose length is about the volume of gas left in it when you switch the BBQ off. I run my BBQ off a 6m length of low pressure hose tee'd off the hose near the regulator with a quick release coupling, this cuts off the supply to the hose when it is pulled apart. What I do is disconnect this and let the BBQ burn itself out thus using all the gas in the pipe. I think long lengths of hose are frowned upon because we have people who would think nothing of pulling the hose off the end of the BBQ and looking to see if there is any gas in it with a naked flame or something equally stupid. On the other hand it could be something as simple as people run it across their pitch, trip over it and break their necks. We take reasonable care and have had no problems. There is a company called BES who sell hose and all the fittings at very good prices online/mail order.
