I can imagine to camp in switzerland must be fantastic with all the mountains they have there, if i take the wife i better make sure i take an extra strong dose of asthma spray, OR, i might give her a miss and have a great holiday without a nagging woman on my back LOL not really, got to have someone to hump the baggage around

The latest on the issue concerning the royal fridge is, the shop have stated that i must have stuck the groundsheet up the flue of the fridge for it to have given off carbon monoxide LOL i said tell me why i would want to try and kill myself + the groundsheet was pegged down in the right manner so therefore tell me how, but then he tells me the grass must have been high grass, then i said, the patch of grass was used before me setting up camp on it so was still very flat in growth, then he tells me the second problem was after the fact of the first burn and had no bearing on it what so ever, the man must have his brains stuck up his ass if he really has a conclusion like that LOL one does have to laugh at his idiotic ideas.

The tradings standard guy went into do his bit and mentioned that the fridge had no warning sign on the fridge due to the heat loss from the flu and the twat stated it did have, so on looking it did have a warning sign on, but, it was for the electrics only, so does that make the man look an idiot or what? the tradings standard guy has said the whole sheet of instructions need to be changed to take in the fact that tents have changed greatly over the last few years and it therefore needs to get up to date on such matter as it is not giving the right guidelines at all and like i said before, it has its wrong guidelines on it, anyhow, the fridge has been sent off to the company that made it for their testings on it to have their conclusions on the matter, but the guy at the shop has now stated that they cannot get it to work oh deary me, i had the same problem when i first set it up on camping and i called the shop on my mobile to seek help on it and the young lad said he will get the manager to phone you back, DID HE, yeh, you are joking, it took me ages to keep clicking the god damn so called great ignition system to get it going, so its not as though i have not told them.

SO i am letting them go on playing at their silly mechanics on the fridge as i know what happened to it and me and i am very positive in what the outcome will be in the end, so all you out there with the same type of fridge be very carefull in how you use it?

hi brummie

we sell the royal 42 fridge and  have sold hundreds this year with out any problems at all with them exept the odd dented ones which go back to our supplier

we also sell the dometic range as well which are all basically the same and have been sold for over 30 years in the camping trade and never have i heard of one doing this

the shop you have sent it back to shouldnt be playing around trying to mend it or see whats wrong as the fridge in question has clearly got a fault and should go back to the importer which is burdens leisure and trading standards should be contacting them in reguards to the fridge and safty stickers ect but i think you will find that all fridges are made in the same factory different name on them

in my experience i would proberly say the flu was blocked or somthing was up against it to prevent the exhaust from doing its job but as you have stated it was clear at back so the fault is internal on the flue

i think you just had a bad one dont give up on 3 way fridges as they have been around a long time without  any problems

Excellent post Kevin, I did feel that it most most likely that Brummies unfortunate experience was just down to an isolated fault. I'm very happy to take the one we've just bought on holiday as soon as possible.

Regards,

Russ

Many thanks for your reply cockney, i was just very concerned as i did not want anyone to go through the same nightmare experience i had as kids could well be hurt, i am going to phone the tradings standards guy tomorrow and tell him of your message, i myself used a 3 way fridge about 20 years ago and that is why i bought another one, so i guess i was unfortunate to get a bad one.

The back of the fridge was all clear for air to circulate around and nothing at all was underneath it except for the groundsheet to which like i said was all pegged down in the right manner, i did find out that unipart has bought out burdens i believe? once again, many thanks cockney

I looked up the Royal fridge as I'm looking to buy one. I like to check reviews before parting with the hard earned.

I honestly cannot believe that someone used a gas powered appliance, inside a tent, then was surprised that they were poisoned with carbon monoxide.

The instructions cannot possibly hope to list every possible enclosed space. I grant you that the lack of a warning sign on a part of the device that gets hot enough to cause a burn is worrying. However, the material that your tent is made from is waterproof and does not allow water vapour to pass through it (unless you have a Goretex tent). Why would there be condensation on the inside otherwise?

A little common sense people. Please.

I think most free standing 3way fridges are are much of a muchness & safe enough when used correctly, certainly it is unwise to run on gas in a tent overnight & never in a tent with sig. Also one needs to put them on a hard base to allow air to circulate all around them, either a table or just bring a sheet of plywood.

I would think that anybody familiar with this type of fridge can read through this old thread & make up their own minds as to the cause of the op's woes. I would guess one reason for users failing to operate these fridges correctly is the often poor translation of instructions into English but basic principles of using any gas appliance is that the area should be well ventilated with nothing to prevent heat dissipation & nothing blocking flue etc.

But these 3 way fridges say you can use them in a tent or awning ! Just not in an enclosure in a caravan. Otherwise what's the point of being able to use gas on it? You are hardly going to stand it in the middle f. Field

I bet the instructions don't say ok to use on gas mode when zipped in a tent with sig. Same rules apply as with any gas appliance, use only in a well ventilated area. Even the most comprehensive instructions can never cater for the terminally stupid.

Quote from the instructions..."when using the fridge with gas the appliance is only meant to be used outdoors"

Im sure this is a faulty fridge etc but the Coleman Galileo tent is a small enclosed tent, great value etc but has very little venting really and has a sewn in ground sheet so even less ventilation. Using the fridge on electric would be fine.

NEVER USE A GAS APPLIANCE IN A CLOSED TENT AND NEVER LEAVE IT ON WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP OR AS WE HAVE HEARD YOU MAY NEVER WAKE UP.

So you should turn the fridge off every night? Even if you have a window in the tent partially open?

Just wondering because I am buying one and may use it on gas now and again in my bear lake. But looks like I shouldn't bother if its gonna kill me. Can you get silent fridges that aren't 3 way?

You shouldn't use a gas fridge in your tent at all. OK if the door is open all day then fine and its a great big tent with loads of open vents top and bottom of the tent then fine but a good rule is to NEVER USE A GAS FRIDGE IN THE TENT like the instructions say. Only use it on electric or leave it under shelter outside.
