I haven't got the hang of adding links yet but here's a question for you all.  Argos have reduced their posh campbeds from £30 to £15.  They've also reduced their not-so-posh-but-very-nice ones from £20 to £15.  The posh ones are out of stock for collection and only available for home delivery so I've reserved 4 of the other ones for collection.  Just wondering if anyone has any info on whether the posh one is much better and has can anyone tell me how heavy / bulky / comfy the other one is please?

OK, I haven't tried both but I have got a "posh" one (the black one), which was reduced to £15 earlier in the summer. 12 year old daughter has one too. She weighs about 5 stone, I weigh rather more!

Now, the problem we have with them is that we can feel the metal cross bars underneath as they come quite close to the canvas. I'd accept that as my problem if it was just me, but if a lightweight like my daughter can feel them, well! We have resolved this by using a camping mat and blanket, but this is certainly something I would look out for in the future. Am thinking of getting a fat airic or similar to go on top to avoid taking camping mat AND blanket

I have seen the Gelert/outwell ones in camping stores, and their cross bars seem to  be at a sharper angle so they're further away from the fabric, if you follow me, and would also be easier to store things underneath. So if the ARgos £20-reduced-to-15 are similar, they would be a better bet than the black ones in my opinion.

Something else to consider is erection - the black ones are, I must say, very easy, about as difficult as a brolley. I have read that some other types require bars to be put in separately which can be a bit of a fatch if they're stiff. The black ones come in a bag about twice the circumference of a folding chair, and half as long again.

Why don't you open up the green one when you get it, and consider it in the light of the points I've made above. If you don't like it, order a black one from home delivery pronto. Are the returns policy the same even if they're reduce - if so, you could take back the one you don't like!

Better than air beds any day

Rose - you've given me just the info I was hoping for.  I wondered about the metal cross bars so I'm hoping that the ones we've got reserved will turn out to be ok. There's nothing on the Argos website that says we can't return sale stuff but I'm sure we'll keep them anyway.  We've got the traditional cheap ones at the minute (with the 4 metal legs you have to force in) and they're really comfortable but they can take quite a while to assemble and there's every chance of losing an eye or two if the legs spring out while you're putting them in place!

We have some similar to the steel one but they are aluminium. You guessed it, they bent after pitching on soft ground in the summer, so one definately no good and one other damaged. 2 others ok. Problem occured because daughter sat in centre sideways to watch DVD so weight all in one place. Don't kown whether this would happen with steel frames. So with only 2 good ones it's back to air beds for the time being!

Hilary, the thought of you asking Argos to let you unpack the campbeds made me laugh because I've always wanted to check things first before I buy them and never dared ask!  I will next time.  We've got quite a small car and roofbox so I'm glad we've gone for the more compact ones.

Helen, I was wondering if steel would be annoyingly heavy but now I know why it's better!  We're collecting the beds tomorrow so I'll report back when we've tested them.

i've got one of these and find it very comfy, especially lying on a self inflating mat too.

I wanted an aluminium one because the steel one was quite heavy but it's much sturdier.

We have these type of camp beds, as my hubby finds it difficult to lie down on the ground, and these are raised.

They are great in a tent, as you can put bags etc under the beds, and keeps the tent tidy.

We have also used them when visiting relatives, instead of air beds.

Definately get easier to use after several outings.

The only negative thing about them is they are quite narrow, and when I'm used to a King sized bed its a bit of a shock!

The ones we were using before (old fashioned style ones with metal legs you force into place across the beds) were even narrower so these ones feel like a bit of luxury!  Lots of people have mentioned the storage space underneath so that sounds like a bit of a bonus. 

Good idea for visiting relatives - we're doing just that at half term so I think we'll take them with us.
