Sounds like you're putting off-road coordinates in. Yes, they do tend to struggle when they can't find a road or POI from their internal map. You may have to just type it into http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and and look the nearesr A-road. "51.178816N,1.826563W"
I also find they struggle if you record your car's current position in 'favourites' when the car isn't actually on a recognised road. Although it records it, it will never find it again and will get you to the closest A-road then drive you round and round as it recalculates looking for a corner inside a barrel!
If it's TOM TOM, you can add an offroad navigator to correct this (but I can't vouch for this) backup your device before adding and don't hold me responsible for any consequential loss, dead-ends or driving across stonehenge! http://www.webazar.org/tomtom/offroad.php?lang=uk
