I use the Tilda steamed pouches, it's all pre-cooked and takes 2 mins to heat through in a frying pan or added to the dish. They come in a variety of flavours or plain,

and how long should it take done like this? I tried it last night: 1 cup of rice, 2 cups of boiling water, top on screwed it down tight, gave it a good shake every 4 to 5 minutes -  20 minutes later and the rice was still hard. so how long should it take (approximately)

I've not tried this way, my version of bringing it to the boil and bunging a lid on works well.

You're not using brown rice are you?

You need a Tupperware multi-server - great for pasta and rice when camping.- shove it in and pour on plenty of boiling water, lid on and leave for about half an hour. No peeking.

The greatest thing I have found for camping is cous-cous. Much quicker than rice, just add the cous-cous to boiling water, stir, cover and leave to stand for 4-5 mins, season to taste. Delicious with curry or bolognaise type dishes. Actually I use it at home too, for a quick meal. I use "equal quantities " of 100mls water to 100gms dry cous-cous, for 2 people, so its quite energy saving, not much water to boil up, and it's something different too! It doesn't look a lot, but is surprisingly filling, if you make too much, you have the basis for a taboule salad dish next day!

the stuff that comes in pouches.

as said before, made for microwaves but stir fries quickly and tastes lovely.

loads of different flavours as well as plain brown and plain white.

Standard easy-cook rice Equal quantities rice and water (one mug of each for 2/3 peeps) Boil water first, add rice, bring back to boil for 5 mins, leave a further 5 mins - NO PEEKING! - and hey presto! lovely cooked rice and really cheap too

Try soaking your rice for about 10-15 minutes before cooking. Make sure you rinse it well too. Cooking only takes a matter of minutes, and cover your pan with a tea-towel. When it's just firm turn off heat but keep covered with the tea-towel. The steam will do the rest.

Or pre cook before your trip and freeze. Just put it into hot water for a couple of minutes when it's curry time

I would agree about couscous - much easier but if you want rice - cook it at home and freeze it in portions. If you are going for a weekend it will defrost in time for use.

Great fans of coucous here too.

Also of the Tupperware multicooker. Have used mine for well over 30 years. just cook the rice for 5 minutes, then pour in and leave. I cover ours with a towel if camping to reduce heatloss. It does take a good half hour this way, but it doesn't spoil if you need to leave it longer, and never goes sticky. It also helps if you warm the multicooker with a splash of hot water first.

It is also great for reheating rice/pasta. Just pour over boiling water, put the lid on and leave for a few minutes.

Lidls do a great par-boiled rice that only takes 10 minutes to cook, and reasonably priced too. Also boil-in-the-bag varieties too.

Bulgar wheat is a very good alternative to rice, too. It takes about 15 minutes but can be added in to stews etc to cook at the same time. Very filling and satisfying!
