We are looking to buy a camping fridge as we are going on our first 2 week camping holiday in August next year.

Would you recommend the Gas / Electric / Mains Fridges 40ltr - is this a good size for a family of 4
Are they good - keep everything cold - do they keep things frozen?
Ive noticed that on here they are doing a special deal for £99 + p&p would you agree this is a good deal.

how long do these fridges last for are there some makes that you would recommend.

Thanks for your help.

Hi There.

I have, had a 3 way Fridge for about 5 years now and it is brilliant !!!  It keeps food etc really cold, will keep food frozen for 2-3 days. Also it also runs cooler when running on gas if you want it really cold !! But it is adjustable.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

have to agree with Steve.......our 3 way fridge is probably the single best item of camping kit we've bought (after the tent - !)

Also agree it works best on gas and hardly uses any gas at all.

We tried various coolboxes and thermo-electric coolers but eventually decided to spend the extra and get a 3 way fridge - and are glad we did.

Had it for 4 years now and no sign of it letting us down.

Is 40 lt big enough ? - depends how much beer you want to keep cool !!

£99 is an excellent price - they usually retail at £150 - £200.

Rod

We had a Combicool model which we passed down to my Dad and replaced with the Mobicool which cools down further (by 5 degrees). I'm a great fan of them - do be aware how much boot space one will take up though.

Which model are you looking at that's £99?

Hi, thanks for your all your comments.
The model we are looking at is the Riversway 3 way combicool.
As you say Piglet have to look at how much boot space one will take.

Hi Bates, it looks to me like it's the older Combicool model (the Mobicool is the newer version). The Combicool as it says cools to 20 degrees below ambient temperature. Ours worked well and just about coped in the heat of the Loire in France in June and July.

We had issues with ours that the plastic insert handle broke and the lid became distorted (separate problems), Waeco (the manufacturers) were very good and sent out a new lid by courier but the handle broke on that one the first time we used it!   It wasn't a huge problem and I didn't bother to contact them for another replacement.

If you're likely to be going to France or Spain I would suggest that the extra capability of the newer model would be helpful - the extra 5 degrees should make a difference (I don't know - we didn't ever find anywhere over 30 degrees this summer )

If you can only go to that price and you're not too worried about the 20/25 degree issue then it's a good piece of kit.   It is big though - we had to move to a trailer pretty quickly after getting ours, you can pack it with your kitchen stuff though for travelling which saves space.

Thanks Piglet, I think we will have a good look into the different types rather than rushing into buying one just because its discounted.

Thanks

It's the designation 'CAB-40B' or 'CAB-40' that tells you whether you've got the lower temp model or not. The 'B' version gets you to 20 deg below ambient, the non-B model to 30 deg below. Quoted electrical power consumption being 75W for the B and 100W for the other - I assume this is from warm.

The instruction book, which covers both models, strangely doesn't use either the words 'Mobicool' or 'Combicool'; it just says Waeco and the model numbers.

I picked up my "B" model from Riversway in Preston about 3 weeks ago. In store they are at £120 but after a slight hiccup they agreed to sell at their e-bay price of £100. I'd been looking for a while and jumped fast when I saw that price - I had not seen anything else within £20. I also confirm that they are brand new in un-opened boxes (at least mine was!) and in mint condition. The only slight downside being that you get their own "Riversway" logo on the front - for some reason I find it slightly irritating when shops do this.

First go was yesterday (mains powered), freeing up our main fridge and getting the beers ready for Christmas! In a centrally heated house it produced ice in the small tray provided with no problem. I must admit I was worried at first because I expected to hear a noise with it running - but the only external sign was that the back vent panel got very slowly warmer.

The majority if not all of my camping is likely to be in the UK for which I expect the B model will be fine. However I'd definitely have gone for the other one if intending to take it abroad.

Neil

Thanks Neil for your technical information this has really helped.
Glad you got a good deal.

I think Im going to wait until the January sales and see if there are any deals with the Cab 40 as we will be going overseas at some point.
Thanks again. Happy Camping

Hi, We've just bought a CAB 40 (30 degree below) from Camping and General as they are having 20% Sale, so it works out at £136 not bad for the new version.
Thanks for your help
