Hi all, I'm looking for a system to carry two bikes which will fit a small hatchback which doesn't have a tow bar of roof rails.

There seems to be so many different opnions in the shops so I thought I'd ask some people I can trust (that's you guys!). I was originally going for one that sits high on the boot and is attached by straps but some people have told me that rear fitted systems often fall off in transit!

Depends if you want to go on the continent.  Boot or rear mounted cycle racks will incur a fine on a lot of the continent.

Not heard of this one before, we've been going to France for over 10 years with a cycle rack and never had a problem.

Can you give us anymore details?

Steve.

Been to Germany (where it was fitted), Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Denmark, - which is "a lot of the continent" with no problems so I would also be interested in what laws I am ignoring.

I do know that with some countries (mainly Spain & Italy) a marker board has to used (yes I do use one) but "rear or boot mounted" bike racks a problem - this is news to me

Sorry Peeps, I misread some advice form The Caravan Club.

This is what it says:

There is new legislation in Portugal which in practice means that only motor caravans are allowed to carry bicycles at the rear of the vehicle; cars should transport them on the roof provided an overall height of 4m is not exceeded. Drivers of cars with bicycles attached to the back of the vehicle will be subject to a fine.

Sorry if I have cause confusion.
