We are just getting back into camping and one of our concerns is keeping food cool. I am currently favouring the 12v/240v cooler option (I don't want the hassle of re freezing packs or dragging 3 tonns of fridge with me either!). I understand they can be noisy from the fan at night, so would shift it to the car or shut it off if it became an issue.
We went through cold boxes and bocks, then powered cool boxes before ending up with a 3 way fridge.
The powered boxes mainly cool to a maximum of degrees between ambient temperature so will not keep things cold enough to be safe if it is hot. If you have EHU they are ok but faffing round keeping them cool without is a nightmare, freezing blocks would IMO be less hassle.
3 way fridges are big and bulky but they do give you a solution that works.
Have to agree with Piglet on this one - our 3 way fridge is probably the best bit of kit we've bought (apart from our tent!). Another problem with powered cool boxes is the amount of power they use - they will flatten a car battery in a matter of hours - beware !!
The WAECO is suitable for use in a tent but not a caravan or a Motorhome. Its Waeco so it should be good. The 12v side of things is a bit shaky. It is only for use when you are on your way to a site.
we are looking for a better/spacious way of cooling, at the moment we have a can fridge (the sort that holds six cans of coke) We found it good but just not big enough. Do the 12v/240 kits keep the food cold or do you suffer with food going off?
I can say were very pleased with the SIBIR 3 way fridge, if you've got room to store one, they like to be level, not tried it on gas yet but sure it would work o.k. . Get it nice and cold the day before you go, then into ziggy power for the journey then into the site power, brill.
Hi Sonia,
Where are you going camping, or rather how hot do you expect it to get?
You probably all know this but it's just that some fridges are better at cooling or have more insulation so work well in warmer weather. The waeco one will cool to 20 degrees C below ambient. You're supposed to keep food in your fridge at 5 degrees or thereabout so if the temperature goes above 25 degrees (please God) when you are on holiday it will struggle.
I guess that the ones that work in warmer weather will be more bulky if they have extra insulation.
