A cap would be desirable, yes. Its not very functional, but the refill shops tend to like to have those back when they swap it for another bottle, as that and the plastic seal demonstrate the refill has been done so by an authorised dealer.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else. They are pretty tough things. You'll be swapping it for another one anyway, soon.

You can buy the screw in caps in a lot of camping shops. Even if you're paying £3.50 for a cap and £10 for a second hand bottle, it's better than the vast sums you pay for a starter bottle (£30???) in the shops.

Having said that I've got every bottle I own (3) plus several for friends from the tip. Just keep looking. And remember it's better to carry two, so even when you get one, keep looking for a spare.

My hubby tried today to get one from the council tip(recycling) but was told they cannot let him have any because they could be unsafe!! well i thought if it was empty it would be checked by the peeps that refill them.

Doesnt take a genius to work that one out. he must have been a jobs worth

Our tip won't give them away because it's not run by the Council but some private company, and they sell them back to the gas suppliers.

Car boot sales usually have them at around a fiver.

Some places when you exchange leave the handle on the one you're handing in, and the new one doesn't have one, so if that's the case take it off before handing it over.

My nearest stockist is 30 miles away.

Not at mine. I smile sweetly and ask nicely, because the gas bottles are kept in a locked cage usually. Occasionaly I find one dumped outside the cage in which case I'l have make a very cursory effort to find a member of staff before *ahem* recycling it  into my car. None of the staff have ever refused to let me have a bottle though.

If your going to have to pay for a bottle You could always change the regulator.

I baught a regulator cheaply for a different bottle..
