weve got a huge family tent which weve been really pleased with except for one thing...it does get very cold as its too big a space to heat or keep warm.  Do the tent carpets help to keep the tent warm or are they just another bit of kit to lug about and find space in the car for!

hi Usatproduction

we have a hartford xl, last year we decided to buy a carpet,it was one of the best buys we have made, when you get up in the morning its nice and warm to walk on, it also wraps up really small,so go on buy one!

We like ours, in our tents with SIG. Not only do they keep it warm underfoot, as Bicks has pointed out, but they also help protect the groundsheet.

What tent have you got?

We love ours too.  The kids can go about with just their socks on without cold feet, it protects the groundsheet AND cuts down on the rustle of the wind blowing underneath the groundsheet.

We just picked up an Outwell carpet for a Sun valley 8, which fits our Quechua just about perfectly.

I was suprised, as it seems to be simply a large picnic rug, albeit a well made one.

I love it, but I'm curious - are other manufacturer carpets different?

Steve

I don't see how a tent carpet can raise the temperature noticeably inside a large tent, but what it can do is make you feel warmer by stopping your feet getting cold. Wearing slippers in the tent makes a big difference for me, and then I put a few picnic rugs/fleeces  down in the areas where they will have most impact eg in the inner, areas where we are most likely to walk or sit.

Our Montana 6 was a lovely big tent in the summer but really not a practical cold weather tent at all. Although the sig minimised any drafts it was far too big a space to try and get or keep warm. MT

I have one for nabraska xl, it is great and does appear to make it warmer (or maybe it just seems that way, just like a carpet does in a house as opposed to stone floor)

I bought a carpet for our Nebraska XXL and we also used it in the Monty 6. OH grumbled at first, saying I had bought another white elephant , but the first time we used it he was really impressed  I think it keeps the tent warmer, as because the back is insulated it stops the cold from the ground `seeping` into the tent. It`s nice to be able to walk around barefoot inside the tent and not have cold feet.

One of the big advantages to me was, due to the size of the XXL and the Monty as well I suppose, we needed quite a few picnic rugs to cover the living areas and the carpet takes a lot less space than the rugs to pack. The carpet also stays in place, unlike the rugs which were constantly being kicked and dragged round the tent by the kids, I was really fed up of putting them back in place. The carpet also stops the wind rustling under the SIG, which the rugs never did, so that`s great as well.

All in all I would recommend the carpets to anyone.

I considered them, then decided to book into a Travel Lodge instead.

Anyone know where I can get some antimacassars for my camping chair?  ;)
