I am trying to buy or at least look at the options for a 2/3 season sleeping bag but I want a square one. The problem is comparing a 2/3 season bag with ones listed as ounces or grams. What would be equivalent to a 2/3 season bag does anyone know? I would appreciate your help.
Also what fabric is best? I have read all the other threads but cant just get my head around it.
I assume you mean the "fill power" when you mention weights. I do agree that the classifications are very confusing and this from Wiki doesn't help much eather.
I would expect a conversion from cm3/gr to cuft/oz would give a usable comparison. I usualy go for a recognised brand and apply a good pinch of salt to their own season rateing.
Best material? Best for what?
Durability, easy cleaning, windproofing, softness, weight, water resistance?
It used to be on the ?? GSM was the numer of grams of filling per square meter .The higher the number the more filling. We have 'Vango Astra sleeing bags .The 250 for 12 year old.Loger has the 350(stopped maiking this, pity as its 120cm wide) and we have the double,.The only thing is wi he double it doesnt unzip all roun so it has to go to laundry or bath to be cleaned.Good bags, nice and warm flanelette inners
I've just bought a couple of Vango Astral 350XL (these are square end) from Taunton Leisure. They are 2/3 season and they are HUGE!! They were recommended by people on here and I'm quite impressed with them size wise and this is after me saying I would only ever take my duvet and found sleeping bags claustrophobic. There is no way I could possibly feel claustrophobic in these!
These were the best price I could find online and still get a left-hand and right-hand zip so I could zip them together.
If you just want one or are not bothered about joining you can get slightly cheaper I think.
They come in large bags though and take up a lot of space but you could get a stuff sack and get them down smaller for travelling. I suppose it depends what kind of camping you do. We are using them for family camping to which I think they are best suited.
You can still get the Vango Astral 350 online too, I ordered one for my daughter. Vango are introducing a new range this year called Galaxy which are more or less the same I think.
Two of them are Easy Camp, Quantum Plus. They are the rectangular variety and made from polycotton and the label indicates that they are for use in temperatures from -5c up to 22c, reasonably priced and my only slight complaint after a quick test run is the length. I am a six footer and these bags are two metres long and I am wondering about the "snuggalability" factor, if you know what I mean.
The other was a Gelert Freedom Lady, for my daughter, and this is the "mummy" shape and appears to have a greater warmth/comfort range. Longer as well but I find the odd shape too claustrophobic.
The Vango Astral 350 (and 350XL) are what we use, and they are good bags. They do unzip all round (it's the double that doesn't).
I think maybe the point was that if you are considering a double sleeping bag then it is better perhaps to get 2 x singles (or 2 of the XL's), one left and one right hand zip, then they can be zipped together to form a massive and comfy double bag if you want, but equally can be unzipped to be washed separately.
