Can anyone help.

We have been looking at the self inflating mats for compactness.

Are they as comfy as the blow up kind? What are the pros and cons.

Hi Scarlett, We have the fat airic self inflating mats from www.alpkit.com they are not really any good for back packing as they are heavier and bulkier than some traditional self inflating mats however they are the most comfortable matress either of us has slept on (including airbeds), they self inflate, are a doddle to roll up, they keep you insulated from the cold ground (airbeds don't, the air in the bed just gets cold) and the thickness of the matress is 70mm so they are ultra comfy.

We also have some 3/4 length backpacking mats from therma-rest these are 25mm thick when inflated and offer great insulation and a bit more comfort over the standard mat but nowhere near as comfortable as the fat airics.

It depends on how you plan to transport the kit and how compact you want them to be, fat airics pack to 150mm x 650mm and the thermarest 100 x 300.

Good luck!!

Lots of choices with self-inflating air pads. Shape, length, width, and thickness. All depend upon the type of camping you are planning. Some brands have velcro along the sides so two or more can be fastened together if you are not sleeping alone...

One thing to watch for on some of the pads is that a nylon shell sleeping bag will slip right off, so if you roll around much at night you may find yourself off the pad or sliding around the tent if you are on even a bit of slope. Some of the pads now have the little plastic dots to give it some grip and keep it from sliding around as much.

One word of advice. Just like for an air mattress... make sure you pack the repair kit!
