Being motorhomers, we move around a great deal, especially in England, Scotland and Wales. Our TV is suited for both analogue and digital signals, yet we are finding reception is very hit and miss. In some areas where digital is available (W. Cumbria for example) we can pick up many channels, yet as soon the rain starts, or we suffer 'poor' atmospheric conditions, the picture starts to break-up.

Also, we have found that almost invariably, the worst pictures of all are BBC's channels. Often the picture is non-existent, even when we can pick up other obscure stations.

Is anyone else having similar problems, or are we doing something wrong? Our set-up was professionally installed and has been checked to ensure it's fully operational. We're beginning to wonder if the reality of digital TV falls short of government promises.

What's your experience?

the main problem at the moment is that digital TV is only broadcasting on as little as 25% of its power in some areas, and will do so until analogue TV is switched off as if its power is increased it will interfere with existing transmissions.

BBC suffers the most as its digital transmissions are the closest to regular TV, resulting in it being the weakest digital signal.

when analogue TV is eventually turned off, digital TV SHOULD be avaliable in all areas, but it does still need a line of sight similar to digital satellite.

The easy option is to get a satellite and receiver, no problem with weak signal areas then.

We bought a complete satellite system in a suitcase for £50 from Maplins haven't had chance to try it yet but we are going to Moffat C&C club site tomorrow for a week so will try it there.

The real issue here is what sort of aerial are you using? If its a Status then you will get problems. If you are in a weak signal area for analogue then its unlikely that digital will be much better. As Tim has said the digital signal is not yet being broadcast at full strength until they close the analogue channels which does not help. We have just gone the satellite route for the very same reason although I have only had it working in the back garden so far!

Go the satellite route if at all possible.

We have one of the Comag suitcase systems as supplied by Maplins, but bought at Lidl last year. I've used it without problems all over the country and even got good signal in Eskdale. Yes they are a bit fiddly to get to grips with, as you will see from the forums but once you get your head round it ten minutes is all you need to set up.

No channel five or four as far as I can tell but you can get loads of regional programmes and radio stations. The Comag kit is preloaded with loads of European satellites as well and you will never use all the features on the receiver.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for all your comments. The whole digital business does seem a little hit and miss and perhaps satellite is going to be the answer.I like the sound of the dish in a suitcase option, rather than have a huge lump attached to the roof. We do have a Staus aerial which seems to work quite well. Thanks again.

Maplins satellite users. If you get a cheapo sky box off ebay you can then buy a "freesat" card for a one off payment of £23 which gets you your channel 4 and 5 channels if you want them.

I must admit that whilst I have freeview at home and it works fine, I have found a dish to be much more reliable solution in the motorhome. The problem with digital is that its an "on or off" situation. If the signal quality is ok you get a picture if it isnt you dont, unlike analogue where you can get a ropy but sometimes watchable picture if your signal is not great.

cheers

John
