Invest in the best you can afford, like bill the bus says get two singles make them wide ones, to make into a kingsize load of room to move around in, we've had our 18 years & washed them loads. they are still like new , £45 each seemed a lot of money then but they were well worth it!
I think if you have a double sleeping bag, you get that cold gap down the middle, wehreas if you have a single each you can snuggle into it with no gaps.

I fancy a double sleeping bag, but I am worried about the cold gap down the middle that Tracey mentioned. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a cold gap? Also, which type of single sleeping bags will zip together to make a double?

That'll be the missus.
We did try double but switched to singles again due to a) the cold gap b) she's still rolls in her sleep and nicks most of it !!!

I think the singles that make doubles are just a case of ordering a right hand zip and left hand zip and...yes you guessed it..zipping them together...At least that's how we thought it's done

We just had two ordinary single bags zipped together, didn't have to get left or right hand zips, never even thought about it to be honest! And yes, we did get a cold gap down the middle, unless I suppose you are a particularly loving couple who spend all night wrapped in each other's arms

Yes we have tried to get another single to fit my wifes Vango but we are unable to find one as it is a couple of years old.So we are looking at a double and giving her one to our son.We sleep on an air bed with M&S picnic blankets underneath with a quilt on top of the airbed.
We have a pair of king size singles which we zip together in the summer - they are big enough to fill the gap - if you are not too large..
-Went away last weekend and there was no way I was zipping together, he nicks it all ,but did put a huge towel over the 2 to absorb the condensation, that said we were really warm in bed. was the getting up that was a bit chilly.
