HI

I wondered if there was anything on the market that allows you to carry your camping gear (tent, cooking equip, and all the bits and bobs) without using a trailer.

We want to go camping (4 of us) but I do not have a trailer as I have nowhere to keep one, I also do not have a towbar fitted to my car and, as the cost of a towbar would be around £120, I am not keen on having one fitted either, so what do I do?

I have a Renault Megane Expression 1.4 Hatchback (small but economical) which can easily accomodate my tent and camping gear for my lone weekend astrocamps but, when it comes to the family trips, what do I do.

Anyone know of anything to assist me?

Cheers
Widdy

p.s Just back from a weekend astrocamp at Edale in Derbyshire.........WET!!!!!!!!

Have you considered a stream line roofrack box?  If you then needed more space than that I have seen boxes and combined cycle racks that simply bolt to the tow bar ball (quick to remove and fit) if you don't want to tow a trailer.  Maybe you could find one with just a box.  If you don't want a tow bar visible at other times you can get ones that can be removed between use but they are dearer.

You can hire these sorts of things. Roof boxes I mean!

I got my roof bars by luck but I am sure they are advertised on ebay.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions.

I thought about roof boxes/bars and checked out the prices, which are considerably cheaper than just a Towbar, so I shall look into this in more detail.

Radixon.....good idea re hiring a roof box and maybe I ought to try before I buy one, thanks.

We got a roof box last year as a cheaper option to trailer managed to fit all our stuff plus 3 adults and 2 kids in that way.. previously we had to take two cars. Halfords had offers on with money off plus free roof bars etc. Would not be without ours now.. although still hankering after trailer for even more stuff!

heheh, I for one have to be very careful about what I take away with me, luckily I have the back seat to use but can't have a trailer - no towbar and roof bars/box no good - convertible!

word of caution - me and my wife decided we needed a roof box for our volvo S40 to fit all the camping gear in - we headed off to halfords and returned via a garage with a 7 seater. We can get all the camping equipment in but probably not the cheapest option!!!!
Our friends have 4 people in the car (seat leon) and a roof box and have no difficulty with their large tent and alle quipment.
