I know this has been done before for caravans but i can't get my head round it all and the DVLA just confuses me!
I've had my licence since 2000 and have cat's B & B1 and all the smaller ones.
Can someone tell me if i'm correct in thinking i can tow a trailer upto 750kg without taking another test? As long as that and combined weight of the car is less than 3500kg?
------------- You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
i'm in prety much the same prediciment as you are, i've got the same type licence. from my understnding you are correct but also the total weight of the trailer + contents can't weigh more than your car when it's empty. it's all pretty confusing and took me many attepts to translate it, hope i've not confused you any more
You can tow a trailer who's gross weight is up to 750Kgs, providing that the kerbweight of your car is at least 750 Kgs.
If the kerbweight of your car is less then that is the maximum gross weight allowed.
It doesn't matter how little you put in the trailer, it is the weight it is plated at which counts.
For example, the Caddy here is capable of carrying 620 Kgs, the maximum gross weight is 746 Kgs - so would just be in your limit. (unless you have a really small car).

I reversed parked my car and trailer for first time in a McDonalds car park when we went away last summer, not perfect but I was impressed...eventually lol
Hi all.
The max weight of an unbraked trailer is 750 Kgs
and your max gross weight of your unbraked trailer must not exceed 50% of your cars kerbweight,100% for a braked trailer.
My nisson notes kerbweight is 1080Kgs my trailer as a plated gross weight of 750 Kgs but all I can tow it at is a gross weight of 540Kgs.

Sorry, tried to edit my post above but too late, Rex is correct, for unbraked trailers the max weight must be no more than 50% of the kerbweight, not 100% as I implied above, that relates to braked trailers as he quite rightly says. Most cars have quite low towing limits for unbraked trailers, often well below the 50%, so that needs to be checked as well.
The relevant date is 1st January 1997 when the New Drivers Act came into force.

OMG! I didn't know this
is this the first step by the Governmnet to remove caravans from our roads?
(ps dont apply to me as I passed my car test way back in the 1960's)
Motorcycle, car and Forklift tests all passed first time
No, there's more that applies - trailers over 750Kgs max weight are ok providing the total max train weight of car & trailer doesn't exceed 3500 Kgs so most family car + light caravans are ok. It's when you get into heavy/twin axle caravans or 4 x 4 territory that there will be a problem.
And then all you have to do is pass an extra driving test towing.
