I'm new to camping and would like some ideas on what I need to buy. I'd be going on my own and need some light kit. I know i'l need a tent and sleeping bag, is there anything else i'l need? I don't drive so I would need my things to be light so I can carry them on public transport. Any ideas?
Hi chilly, welcome to ukcs there's a thread about lightweight gear here, and halfay down rozinante has put a link to more lightweight kit. Hope this helps.
OOH, exciting isn't it! Camping mats would be useful, bulky but light, can attach to outside of rucksack, and essential to keep cold out. Haven't back packed for years but very happy memories

Its better to regret things you've done than things you have never tried
We were at a camping exhibition at Codecote yesterday. One thing that I thought looked good was a sleeping mat that fitted into a bag that was smaller than a sleeping bag sack. It did not weigh much either.
How about a set of wheels to pull along all this stuff? Like a trolly of some sort. Might save a lot of backache!
Went backpacking in my younger days. Once had backpack so heavy I put it on my shoulders and couldn't stand up! the worst thing was going underground to the loos at Glasgow station and having to lug the thing down there with me and into a cubicle - couldn't leave it lying around to be pinched.
You can get little plastic mini containers (from £ shops) for face cream, shampoo, etc so you don't have to take big bottles of stuff, some places sell sachets now as well.
