Has anyone unlocked their GPS unit?

I am looking to unlock a small GPS handset to install non propriety maps for off road navigation.  I understand that some ar more closed even after unlocking than others.

Current favorite being Fujitsu Loox.

I managed to unlock my Medion MDPNA 150 unit that runs on Windows CE. If yours is CE it takes an edit to the registry to show the standard Windows taskbar with start button.

From there you can install any "PDA" type software, I put TomTom 6 on and rather than run it from the unit, run it directly from the SD Card.

The only downside is after a hard reset the "mods" need to be redone as the original program is hardcoded into the memory.

I have been reading GPSpassion but with so much info on so many different models I was trying to take a shortcut.  I havn't bought a unit yet, I currently use Memory Map on a laptop in the van but I want to take it on walks and don't want to lash out on a full PDA..

The Loox does run cut down CE and scores well for small size, price, and ease of hacking.  I will add Medion for consideration.  Have you installed any other apps?  Can it switch between landscape and portrait?

Once you do the registry hack, it then behaves as a normal PDA and any application can be loaded.

The default is landscape and I don't need to rotate, but the same software on my PDA (Ipaq H6315) will switch.
