Ok, i'm probably going to make myself look a complete plonker asking the following question but here goes anyway......
With Electric coolboxes, do the items you put in them have to be cold beforehand to remain cold or can you put something in at room temperature to be cooled? And do they generally keep things (wine in particular!) adequately cold? Does that make sense?
Feel quite silly now but an answer would be appreciated
Ta v much

The coolbox I use appears to chill a warm bottle of wine down pretty quickly. But I do think that the area is a bit of a minefield as my brother in law has one that only keeps cold things cold and is useless at chilling down.Im sure if you search previous threads you will be inundated with info.It appears that fridges are up  at the top of the commonly asked questions with "where do you wee in the night"or the great bucket debate.

If you treat them like a basic coolbox you will not go far wrong. Therefore, try and put items from the fridge into the coolbox at the last minute and also use ice packs (I know what you are thinking why the ice packs?). The benefit of the ice pack is that it assists the cooling in the first instance and once the coolbox is down to temperature the ice packs last a lot longer than usual.

If you are using one of these in the back of the car when going away make sure that you allow a reasonable amount of room around the vent as this will directly effect the efficiency of the coolbox.

Finally if the coolbox is a 12v car one get the mains adapter (about £10) that allows you to plug it into the mains at home before you set off ( I tend to do this for 30 mins or so) and also if you use a hook up at the campsite it will double as a little fridge in the tent.

I bought a Halfords one about 4 years ago and would recommend it to anyone its the largest one they did and you can fit in as much chilled items as required for a long weekend.

Hope this helps.

I think the electric ones are ok ours works well but I do tend to take some frozen stuff with us which must help with the initial temperature drop. We have had to turn ours off sometimes at night because things were starting to freeze.

We turn ours off at night because of the hum. We do have some thin ice packs and if there is freezer facilites we freeze them by day and add to the box for overnight. We usually find that it can be so cold in the morning inside the box that tit doesn't switch back on straight away. It also depends on the amount of stuff in there.
