If you treat them like a basic coolbox you will not go far wrong. Therefore, try and put items from the fridge into the coolbox at the last minute and also use ice packs (I know what you are thinking why the ice packs?). The benefit of the ice pack is that it assists the cooling in the first instance and once the coolbox is down to temperature the ice packs last a lot longer than usual.
If you are using one of these in the back of the car when going away make sure that you allow a reasonable amount of room around the vent as this will directly effect the efficiency of the coolbox.
Finally if the coolbox is a 12v car one get the mains adapter (about £10) that allows you to plug it into the mains at home before you set off ( I tend to do this for 30 mins or so) and also if you use a hook up at the campsite it will double as a little fridge in the tent.
I bought a Halfords one about 4 years ago and would recommend it to anyone its the largest one they did and you can fit in as much chilled items as required for a long weekend.
Hope this helps.
