Gawdsakes, tent poles are like car tyres..they wear out and get damaged and need replacing. There's not a single manufacturer that guarantees poles for the lifetime of their tent, I don't think, not fibreglass ones anyway. Most poles break because of either careless handling or while using tents in weather conditions that they're not designed for.
Replacement poles are usually supplied as sections because it's a five minute job to replace a section and it's a ridiculous waste of money to throw a 95% okay pole out for the sake of one piece. Anyway, an 8.5mm pole could be any length...how long is a piece of string? And with poles costing about £1+ per section.....
I've had replacement poles from Vango in the past as a goodwill geasture, once because I couldn't source a supplier of an awkwardly sized piece easily. Great customer service considering, as I said, poles are regarded as items with their own T&Cs under the guarantee. If they've now decided that it's not cost effective for them to hand out endless free replacements to anyone that's split a pole in any way, then that just brings them into line with other tent manufacturers.
