Tykey:

I'm thinking of getting an inverter and didn't realise they have a square wave output.  Does this imply more power for a given current rating as the rms value for the voltage will be higher?  Sorry if that's a stupid question!

No, the power is equivalent to a sine wave.

The output isn't a true square wave either, (modified square wave), from a just a shorter duty cycle on the cheap ones to a stepped square on the more expensive ones.

Why not just get a 12 volt charger for the laptop, no more expensive than an inverter and more efficient.

halfords are doing a ring 300watt for 31.99 at the moment which is a good price.

I was going to suggest exactly the same thing, however looking back at the OP's post they never mentioned a laptop - I think the first reply merely made the assumption based on what the product blurb mentioned.
