We're are regular campers for years now and have always used an air bed. We've started camping through most of the year and are now finding an airbed too cold in the cooler months and too heavy for festivals, and too high for our smaller tent.
We have just tested our sunlounger cushion in our tent and the height was perfect, however they were very hard and I had the most awful nights sleep.
We are now considering purchasing a self inflating mat, but I have a bad back and fidget. We have a double sleeping bag. What mat would people recommend? Thermarest? Outwell? Vango? and would you recommend a double over 2 singles? My husband is also not sure about the prices of the self inflating mats and if its really worth spending the money.
Get down to your local Aldi quick, they have them in at £9.99. We got two yesterday, tried them out on the living room floor and they seem ok. And if you want extra comfort, for that price you could doubly up the quantity and put one on top of the other - mega comfy!

DH has got a multimat which is 75mm and very comfy - we have all tested this thumbs up!

Do you know how thick they are?
2ins thick, 74ins long, 26ins wide and about 2.5lbs weight.

They really aren't very comfy, we've just been out out and brought 2 and they offer no support at all for my back. My hubbie is thinking of keeping one and we'll get a fat Airic for me, can anyone advise if the Airic or the Robens is better?

I only got some because we are going on a 2/3 day cycling/camping trip round Lake Garda early next month, and we wanted something cheap, reasonably light, and easily packed in our luggage and on a bike.

I have both a Fat Airic and a Robens mat and think they are very similar in terms of comfort and price. I dont think that you can compare an airbed to a self inflating mat as the mat is firmer but offers better support if that makes sense. I use airbeds and mats dependant upon the type of camping I am doing. I would suggest that you stick to the airbeds for summer camping and use the mats in the colder months as they are certainly warmer. The other thing you will notice if you are a sleeping fidget is that mats are generally narrower than airbeds.
