I've just brought my DH a firepit / portable bucket bbq for camp fires, we got some heat logs to try out tonight, in our garden, but they seemed to let out quite a bit of smoke which I presume would not be welcome on campsites by our neighbours, can anyone reccomend a good fuel to use that is safe around tents ( obviously we wont be too close to the tent!! ) is low smoke but still lets out a good heat for sitting round?

I've bought a couple of the slow burning logs, one from Sainsburys and the other from Wilcos.  Both were about £1.50.

Haven't tried them yet, so don't know if they are smokey.

Have used the synthetic log things & think they are great.

Clean & easy to use. You just light the paper wrapper (smokes a little until the paper has burnt away) & they burn for around 2 hrs.  Have just bought a cheap enamel baking tray to put mine in - have used BBQ before but now have a cadac so can't do that anymore.

We used the synthetic log thing last night - can't remember its name  - but it burnt well and gave off enough heat, when it was alight we found that giving it a poke and breaking it down a bit was better, I have only found 1 shop round here that sells them so I'm off there tomorrow to buy their entire stock for our forthcoming summer hols!!

The best bit for me was that you didn't get that camp fire smell on all your clothes

I got those logs a from asda a couple of years ago, as you say, a bit smokey to start, but burnt well afterwards,although a few sparks blew out from them if you gave it a poke.  I thought they were only about £1.50.

Looked for them this year , none in asda, but tescos had them , £3 each , it'd cheaper to burn a big bag of charcoal.

Will have to look in wilkos, were they by the charcoal? didn't see any in our one. Unless they may be in by the household firelighters?
