Hi amaboverd

I bought the high canvas conversion kit when we outgrew our erde. I have to say, it looks and works well. Almost doubles the amount of kit we can take.

I have seen, I think, what you're describing (but not in wood). Last year a family near us had the same trailer as ours. They had a flat canvas cover, with four rectangular holes cut, two each side, to take two car roof bars with a roof box on top. The only drawback was that they had to fill the trailer, put the cover on, then lift the roofbox and bars on, so the trailer was inaccessible. But I suppost if you pack methodically, once the covers on, you won't need anything out of the trailer.

Hi Amaboverd,
I'm just about to leave work & go to B&Q to buy materials to make high sides for my Erde 141, watch this space, I'll let you know how it goes (I'm NOT a joiner btw) I've planned it carefully (even did a 3d model using google sketchup) & by my reckoning I can build the high sides for about £30 using 44mm PSE for framework & 9mm Hardwood Ply, probably cost me as much again in preservatives/varnish though
I don't intend to put a roofbox or hardtop on it as yet, maybe I will later if this first stage is successful enough to give me confidence
I'll keep you posted .................. wish me luck!
Cheers,
Spiny.

Just doing my trailer up and spent £60 on two 8 x 4 sheets of 1/2 inch marine ply, guess you could use thinner ply for the sides.

I used 18mm ply for the sides as I always intended to bolt the rails for the roofbox through the sides so I wanted it to be sound. When I replace it I might try 12mm ply as it would be lighter. To be honest the lid cost about £40 as I bought pre cut lengths for the sides. The added cost is the hasps and the toggle clasps. You will see that I couldnt decide which would be best. This probably added an extra £20 - £30 but at least the lid is secure and I can lock anything in the trailer knowing it is safe. the design is very simple and all that is needed is a screwdriver and hammer although I also used pot rivets to secure the Toggle clips and the hasps.

All in all the lid cost far less than the poly lid that Erde and Daxara supply. The downside is it is heavier than the proper lid but we can put up with that.
