I find the Waeco thermoelectric cool boxes very noisy. Are there any silent electric cool boxes?

Hi,

We find our 3-way fridge (Waeco 100W) is completely silent - until you start rooting for the Brie at midnight among the milk, wine, jams, juice ........

I think ours is called an eezitil or something like that. Got it from Asda. All we get is a very faint "hum".

Agrees with Surfspud & Barbara.

We also have the Aldi coolbox & had it on for 8 nights constantly the other week & hardly heard it even in the dead of night, just a very very quiet hum, in fact a fly made more noise than the coolbox, when it used our tent to escape from the rain.

It would appear that some Aldi boxes are quiet and some are not (see other threads). I have been looking at the 3way absortion boxes which are silent but read that they should not be operated in  a "closed room".Does that mean a tent at night? These boxes do not seem to have such a good insulation as i expect they are mea'nt to be working all the time, so to leave them switched off during the night would mean a rapid loss in cooling. Thanks for all your help but i'm still scratching my head. If this weather continues we shall not need a coolbox anyway!

Three way fridges are silent running, so you can leave them on all night. We've used ours on mains electric & also on gas, and have never heard a sound from it.

When they say shouldn't be operated in a "closed room", they're probably refering to the fridge when it's operating on calor gas - however, unless you have a SIG and keep all your vents tightly closed, then your tent will be vented anyway.

You do need to make sure that a 3-way fridge is sitting level, so if you do buy one, and you plan to camp on a slope, take some wood blocks with you to level the fridge.

I can't fault our 3-way fridge in operation - it keeps food colder than our domestic fridge at home, and it makes ice cubes too

To be honest I think they are all the same but it is our ears that are different. Everyone seems to be able to tolerate and hear a different level and pitch.

I can't handle it if the TV has been left on a blank channel. To others in my house they think it is switched off but I can hear a very high pitched noise.

Wheras at night because our room is so hot we have an electric fan going. This doesn't bother me in the slightest, and it is alot noisier than a fridge, yet many say they could never get to sleep with this noise.

Just to re-iterate what JK98 said... three-way varients (like the Waeco) are totally silent; no moving parts. Thermo-electric ones have fans and compressor ones have (surprise, surprise) compressors, so the only way to guarantee silence (and fantastic performance!) is to get a three-way.
