Go for the 6 x 4. Even if the smaller one looks big enough to take all your gear at the moment, you will find more "absolutely essential" items very soon, and then you'll wish you'd bought the larger trailer

The first rule of camping is that however much luggage space you have, you will fill it!I can cycle camp or back pack, but give me a 7 seater land cruiser, I'll fill that by myself too.

Thanks for the advice.

We were bidding on one on ebay last night and got outbid but the man that was selling it said that he would build one for us and he can fit the towbar for us. There are still some decent people out there!! Going to see him on Saturday so will speak to him about a big trailer, bigger is better isn't it!

I bought my trailer 6x4ish some 2 years ago from trailer / hire place. It was a little more money,  but far better than those little dinky things you get next to nothing in from halfords.

Anyway, can't do without it now. Went from car, to larger car, to roof box, to trailer and then trailer with extention sides, bars and roofbox. As we progress it will end up being a bloddy big caravan. In summary get the bigger one and ensure you can add to it in terms of making it bigger.

I had a 4x3 one, extended the sides to make it deeper and put a wooden lid on it.

I went out last weekend an bought a 6x4........ Bigger is always best.

I just bought a caddy 535 with extended sides, its massive. Size is 5' x 3'5" and 31" high. Can be stored on its end as the lights are recessed.

I just bought a trailer and had exactly the same problem. I wanted as big as possible but my budget was a real limiting factor. Eventualy got a second hand one 5ft x 3.5 ft with side height extentions for £350. Well pleased with it and as others have said it now lives in the garage ready packed so we can just hitch and go.

Yep, 5ft x 3ft7" is what we use with ABS Lid, at the time it was as big as my budget would allow for buying a new Trailer cash, and as that was back in 2009 it stands me at nowt now.

So glad I did not go for anything smaller, as all the kit goes in it, leaving the car just about empty.

The Trailer came with it's own roof-rack, so it seemed rude not to add a roofbox, so I got a 520lt roofbox of ebay.

It's nice now to have the extra capacity, that the roofbox provides.

When I first got the Trailer I added a locking aluminium "Trailer Tongue Box" that sits on the "A" Frame, now that was a useful addition and is great for storing 2 CampinGaz 907 cylinders, tools and security stuff etc.

Photo in gallery.

Do go for bigger, we have gone from a Mitsubishi L200 with roof box and 4x3x3depth to a passat estate with roof box and the same trailer, we went camping at easter with the new car and knew everything wouldnt fit in the dog was at my feet, where as in the l200 he was in his cage in the boot, the kids couldnt move as they all had to hold something, so hubby decided to invest in a bigger trailer 6x4 bought one that needs work done and has ripped it to bits and is in the process of turning it into a box trailer with sides of 4foot and hes gonna put a solid roof on so we can add roof bars to this and get another roof box (opps he doesnt know that part)I am hoping that everything will fit in the said trailer hes got 19 days till were off camping and we need to use new trailer

Mine is a 4ft x 3ft Brenderup 1150s with extension sides and ABS lid, and all the gears go into the trailer except for the 5-pole Blue Diamond windbreak, freeing up the car for provisions, cool box, beddings, my kit, doggie kit and brew kit.

I still have room to spare in the car and trailer, however, I do not need to buy anything else as I have reached my tent set up nirvana.

It fits into the garage nicely without having to tidy/empty out the garage.

It tows like a dream, and it makes packing and unpacking at home so much easier. Being narrower than my car, I do need to worry about it not being able to go through tight spaces.

The lid got damaged when I tried to jam it shut with the windbreak in place. Fixed it with duct tape and Sugru self-setting silicone rubber, and covered the crack on the outside with a decal.

I managed to have a dry pack up at Easter as it was dry, windy and sunny. Therefore, the trailer is now packed and ready for the next trip in mid May, can't wait!

I needed to get a trailer when I got my current tent which is canvas and takes up a lot more room in the car, which means I cannot take the folding bike with me.

I tried using a Thule Easy Base with an Easy Bag, and I was at risk of overloading the car, with the tyres nearly touching the wheel arches. Hence I got the trailer.

When I was spec'ing the trailer, I knew I needed one that was bigger than my roof box which is 415L. I could have opted for just the trailer with an ABS lid which would have been sufficient, however, I decided to have extension sides which doubles the original trailer capacity by 100%, by increasing the height without increasing the width and the length.

This means I can keep all my gears in the trailer, including any spares such as chairs and tables etc...

It clears the garage opening with about 3cm to spare, phew!

It cost me an arm and a leg last year to buy the trailer as well as to upgrade my sleep system. However, the trailer was money well spent and I am very happy with it, as I know it will give me many years of good reliable usage.

Just remember that any trailer you buy has to fit on your pitch along with your car and tent so bigger isn't always better.
You may be better off looking at smaller trailers but with higher sides.
