I have twin electrics with my tow bar and just wandered if there was any way i could run the 12v water pump and 12v light in my Dandy camper from it ,instead of buying a leisure battery. The pump just has the two wires that you would put onto the battery terminals but i wandered if there was an adapter that converts from the 's' socket on my tow bar to the two wires ,so i can connect my pump to it.
Or is there another way of connecting it?
Not sure how your Dandy electrics are connected, but on caravans you can run your 12v stuff off the car battery by plugging in the 12S, and setting the switch in the van to the "car" position.
All i have is a pump with the two wires on the end of a long flex which connect to a battery.........which i don't have. There are no fitted electrics as such and this is why i want to use the car battery if i can.
I think you would have to make up something yourself, I'm sure it could be done using the 12S on the car with the normal 12S plug, taking the power into the Dandy to a simple fuse and switch set up, and some connector where you could connect up the pump and lights.
If my OH was here he could suggest something, but he is in Azerbaijan right now. I will ask him when he gets back on sunday if you don't get any other replies.
years ago that was how we used to power the van, but this presented a problem if you didnt have a battery aswell, as when a person went out and left you in the caravan if you didnt have a battery as a spare then the remaining person had no way of powering anything, then it didnt matter to much as we had gas lamps in the van and a foot water pump but now! i dont think really you could manage it unless you have a load of torches and a water container
Would it not be better to just use a single extension cable from your 12S socket, and split the two items off to their respective needs at the camper? You could then fit each circuit with its independent fuse.
You could run a two core cable from a 12S plug, +ve to pin 4 and -ve to pin 3, and connect these to the water pump and lights, through a fuse if possible, as suggested. Then again it would be easier just to run both to a cigarette lighter plug and use this.
I know I've said this in a number of threads before but... don't forget a car battery is not designed to be drained and used to power stuff while the engine's not running; doing so causes irreversible damage to the battery. Only leisure batteries are deigned to be 'deep cycled' or (in English) drained to nearly flat and re-charged.
------------- Please do not adjust your mind... there is a fault in reality
(a) The amount of lights used in a Dandy, plus the water pump, are not likely to exceed the power demands for the obligatory lights, which are often in use when the engine isn't running. The main concern is that of a long period of battery drain, and without the car being used before the drain becomes critical.
(b) I would be cautious about using a cigarette lighter socket. The fuse demands for this can be quite low, and that part of the cable loom will not have the carrying capacity (amperage) that will have been provided by the towing sockets of the car.
LIghter sockets are rated at 10A normally, obligatory lights are only about 4A, and I haven't got the size of the 12S cable, but my single socket 12N cable is rated at 8.75A.
