I tried my Kamei roofbox out for the first time last month on my Focus - fantastic. It made virtually no noise while driving and swallowed up loads of equipment (but not over 50kg). It did knock the mpg down from around 60mpg to 55mpg, but that's not too bad.

They are pricey for a decent one but will last for ages.

We had a roof top box for years and wouldnt have been without one. However we have now let it go in favour of a roof top BAG.  Its holds as much but is easier to store!

I've been using my roof box on and off for the 14 years, still going strong. On occassions I would be lost without it. Not only used for holidays but transporting 'stuff' to university and back and all the other jobs that need a bit of load space.

Also got a Kamei 400 from roofbox.co.uk.

Totally recommend it. Did knock our mpg down too.

But made such a difference as to what we can take... We have upgraded from a relatively small Decathlon 6 man tent, to a Bear Lake 6 with extension, tables, chairs etc.

The more luggage space you have, the more you fill...

It'll be a trailer for us next

I used a trailer for years and have now changed to a roof box..so much easier and secure.I sold the trailer and bought both roofbox and roofbars with the money..the roofbox is 450 litres. When I change my car I don't need to fork out the cost of a towbar..at most a different fitting kit for the roofbars..

I recommend buying a good one.

If you search the net you can get a good deal. I bought a Thule Atlantis 680. - Dual side opening. VERY quick to fit. good quality etc.

If you go to the Thule website you can use their gizmo to see what the box will look like on your car etc.

Buy good and it will last.

A good guide to roof boxes (brands, sizes etc) and which one will suit best can be found here:

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/

Click on 'roof boxes' and then 'information'

I bought a Mont Blanc from Motorworld on line for £139 about 1 month ago,it was £179 in store. Its got a 3 point lock and its good quality (450 litres). I used to sell Thule products and although excellent quality they are expensive and I find the Mont Blanc roofbox not that much different quality wise.It only opens on one side which I actually prefer, the hinges/locks etc all look reasonable quality, mind you I did think about buying a used Thule roofbox but am delighted with my purchase..

I have a trailer & a roofbox, Using a trailer will take weight off your car & will comfortably carry up to 500kg, where a roofbox will add weight & wind drag to your car & will carry not much more than 50kg.

I have just received my Kamei Corvara roof box from roofbox.co.uk, seems excellent quality, attaches to my aerobars without any problems and it looks good as well. Went for a medium sized box so I can also get 2 bike carriers on the roof at the same time. we have used it mainly for lighter bulkier things and it seems to work very well.

No noise from the box whilst on the move and I haven't noticed any great reduction in economy (although the car is a big diesel automatic)
