A quick google and I find they are available ready-made

At approx £7.50 each inc postage they're cheaper than sawing the bases off mains lamps - pity you can't buy them individually :-

Hi

Why would you want to saw the base off the mains lamps??

I was thinking of using a 240v 11w energy saving bulb and using my 12v invertor running of my leisure battery 110Ah.

My question is what is the difference :- 12v bulb built-in invertor or 240v bulb standard invertor?

Regards

David

Power wastage - not sure how much - it's just a pity to use one invertor to turn 12 volts into 240 volts, then another one to make the 70 volts (??) to drive the tube once it's started.

I have had 12v Floris and thought that they were very good until I saw the Cold Cathode lamps. Again, I thought that those were good until I saw how little power LEDs use. I have now changed all my lighting to LED and don't have to worry about lighting using up power

Leds are only more efficient up to a few watts.

And the colour temperature is fine for finding your way in the dark, not for comfort.

I just don't get some of the hype surrounding a very useful technology. On the internet it has more than a whiff of "free energy" / "perpetual motion" about it ...

"Lumin Output 6 x 1.5 w leds = 600 Lumin (100) watt equiv)"

A 100 watt incandescent lamp actually produces more like 1700 lumens.

They're effectively saying that 9 watts of LEDs would light up a medium size room better than one and a half 1200 lumen 18 watt linear fluorescents.

A pity they don't show photos of them side by side.

--------------

The mercury bit is positively scurrilous. By far the most mercury enters the environment from coal-fired power stations producing vast amounts of electricity to enable people to heat their kitchens with those nasty quartz halogen spotlights that make the copper bottoms of pans look so appealing.

Safe disposal of fluorescent lamps is no great problem these days and councils will all be collecting them with the other recyclables before long. Hopefully they will start recycling the ballasts too ... no one mentions the pollution produced by semiconductor manufacture in the far east.

--------------

LEDs are used for a variety of reasons. They're fairly efficient, (using red ones to replace under-run incandescents in traffic lights is a no-brainer) but it's their robustness, long life, and the ability to switch them on and off rapidly which is their key advantage.

Arrays of them will even be replacing Low pressure Sodium streetlights - not because they can even come close to the efficiency, but for all those other reasons - and no one would disagree they have infinitely better colour rendering than an LPS...

In small lamps they extract the last drop from a nearly flat battery, and have the advantage of a focussed beam and the eye is very sensitive to the blueish spectrum - which is why I'll be fitting more LEDs to my pushbike - but the 9 watt minispiral fluorescent - in spite of appallingly bad focus still does a cracking job.

Last year in my 1 man tent I managed fairly well my 5 blueish LED cycle lamp, but I wouldn't choose to live like that. Most of us would still plump for candlelight for a romantic tete a tete ...

----------------

If I actually have 9 watts available in my tent, I'll stick with a 9 watt minispiral fluorescent.

Though since I have EHU, I will actually have 1 x 20 watt, 2 x 7 watt, 1 x 9 watt, a black light, rope light, and maybe even a light chaser.

My safety-critical test bed :-

2 watts of LEDs, 9 watts of fluorescent, 20 watts QH front, 2 watts LED rear.

My ultimate aim is to have lights that are useful even in daylight.

True enough but " THEM " do use the things. Their ones are some £300 a pop or so I am led (no pun intended - good though ain't it  ) to believe. The characters above would be better described as "Walts"

I hear what your saying but i still say LED's are better and more efficient and getting better by the day.

149

The future of lighting is here today with the introduction of the EverLED™ TR LED powered 48" fluorescent tube replacement. Take that old fluorescent tube out, put the new EverLED™ TR LED tube in, and start to enjoy all the benefits of LED lighting right away!

Environmentally Safe - No mercury, lead or phosphor. Fully recyclable

Long Lasting - 10 year lifespan

More Efficient - 20% less power required

More Versatile - Loves the cold! Available in a wide range of color temperatures. No glass to break

Anyway you must know about the K2 luxeons have you read much about the Cree?

Cree is leading the LED lighting revolution and setting the stage to obsolete the incandescent light bulb through the use of energy-efficient, environmentally friendly LED lighting.

 XLamp MC-E LED.

Cree's new XLamp MC-E LED provides up to 790 lumens

220

http://www.anglia.com/cree/index.asp

LLF's claims that its solid state lighting uses only 12 watts of power, 85 per cent less than traditional incandescent bulbs, and can be retrofitted into existing light sockets. It also insists that it offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to energy efficient CFL bulbs, arguing that its LEDs generate a softer light, use 50 per cent less energy and contain no mercury.

"The combination of Cree's lighting-class LEDs and LLF's lighting-systems technologies should set the stage for Cree to obsolete the light bulb, a 19th century invention that wastes energy and pollutes our environment," said Chuck Swoboda, chief executive officer of Cree, adding that the lighting market is fast approaching a "tipping point" with billions of sockets in existing fixtures now addressable with energy-efficient LED lighting

I don't know i've just got a thing about LED's i guess

They are taking over and very fast too. with good  color temperatures too. I think very soon you will not see many incandescent type lights about in shops at all.
