Hello, I have seen lots of vans on sites that have a windsock or flag flying from them.

I have some questions regarding these

• What are they used for (is it so your children can easily find you)
• Where do you buy them from (if  asked in an accessory shop would they think I had gone completely bonkers )
• Are they easy to fit

Anyway, looking forward to camping at Whitefields on the Isle Of Wight in a couple of weeks so lates pray for dry weather!

You've hit the nail on the head, they aid location of your unit from afar. They are especially useful on the rally field where large numbers of caravans are all in row and there is very little to differentiate your row from the next.

The trick is to get a unique windsock or a combination of windsocks that mark you unit out from the rest.

You can buy them on ebay or look using google. Windsock supplier will usually supply everything you need - windsocks, poles, ground stakes etc.

To assist when at night you can even attach lights to the poles.

Of course some people fly them because they can and for no other reason because it tells others where their from, e.g. you see a large number of flags with a white rose on them. Remember not to put them to close to the red rose .

Hi Trooper, thanks for that explanation, I did wonder why every had these flags and windsocks.  It is a good idea especially for children to identify where they 'live'.

Flags and windsocks are great when sited abroad.  We find that fellow country men home in on us for a chat particularly when we fly our Yorkshire flag.

They are also good when you stray far from the site on your bike.  It's great to see your site marker getting closer as you near home absolutely knackered!

Don't fly them near overhead power lines or trees!!

knock any tube/ pipe into the ground, (one length of those telescopic clothes line props type of thing) then lash the pole to it with three or four zip ties

Or use ball bungies ................ reusable, less waste.
