You can get lots of walkie talkie phone apps nowadays, we have Walkietooth for Android which as the name suggests works between phones using bluetooth, no phone signal or internet required. One of the handsets is the base and the others connect to it. Handy but of course limited by the distance between phones, much the same as walkie talkies.

Yes Zello is one of those apps I use
Not just for the walkie talkie features using phones.
But can use tablets/pcs too with microphone and radio gateways using the pc software,so all devices can be interactive.
Biggest problem I find even now,you cannot solely rely on GSM phone signals in some places,so I tend to use both two way radio pmr446/CB and Zello app where GSM signals ok.
