What is the 'thing' called which you use to convert the power - it has a plug on one end and an attachment at the other which fits a cigarette lighter? Mine has packed up and I want to look for another on e-bay but do not know what to put in the search box.
Hiya. You mean a power inverter. I have one permanently rigged in the car for the kds' laptops etc. Mine came from Maplins and has a cigarette lighter connection and crocodile clips for a leisure battery.

The official name for them are rectifiers
No, a rectifier is not an inverter. They are, basically, opposites. An inverter changes DC into AC. A rectifier can change AC into DC. I say 'can' because rectifiers are also used to smooth rough DC as you would get from a dynamo. Rectifiers are also fitted to the alternator (produces AC) in your car. This converts the AC into the DC that your battery and electrical system requires.
