in our folding camper we've got the above type fridge what I want to know is when the weather is really hot does the fridge perform alright or does it tend to under perform when working off 220v.
Reason is we've just been to holland with great weather 29c but found the fridge struggled to get cool until the the temp dropped to about 20c, its just we've never really noticed this before and thought will the lower voltage this may have an effect.
it can be just lack of ventilation around the back of the fridge ,if its fitted in then it should have vents above and below the fridge ,you can fit 12v fans to extract the heat blowing it out of the top vent ,the caravan or MH section will have more tips
even just shading or erecting the tent with the fridge side out of the sun makes a difference
thanks fat bloke, the fridge is built in and the camper spot on level, the only thing it might have been was lack of circulating air in the camper as we we're on a forrest site and as I say the weather was scorching. The fridge did improve when temperatures dropped to 19-20c.
also the area around the fridge was warm so it must have been struggling to cope with the reduced voltage as well I suppose
its fairly easy to improve the circulation if you can get access underneath the fridge (i presume its standing on the floor) you can carefully drill more holes underneath the floor(look out for wiring ,pipes etc)with a hole saw and buy the pukka gratings from caravan shops (they are round in several diameters) and you can fit 12v PC type fans inside the upper vent that blow outwards (its easy to bodge a little frame and work from the outside by unscrewing the grill) we fitted a pair to our MH ,ran the wiring up discretely to the zig and used a spare fuse and switch.its only needed on really hot days they wirr a little but you can switch them off at night ,worked a treat.
ours was an old MH so the fridge wasnt sealed so well as modern ones so i also made a tin funnel that fitted across the entire width of the top of the fridge and directed the heat towards the vent rather than it filtering out of the drawer above it ,handy for drying the cutlery though but i thought it better outside the MH
so long as you seal the grating back up when you screw it back on (silicones ok but i prefer Dum Dum) no sign of your work will be seen
