Can anyone tell me how to find out how much gas is left in a cylinder. We're still using one from the previous owner. Do you weigh the cylinder or what?
The best way is to weigh the cylinder. The empty (tare) weight is printed/embossed on the cylinder, so just subtract that from your measurement to ascertain the weight of the gas you have left.

We have been using one that came with a 2nd hand stove i bought and i don't think its possible to use it up, we have used it quite a bit and its still going but i know what will happen, if i don't refill now i am sure it will ker put on the next trip halfay through frying my bacon and sausage and... that would upset me greatly!
So i guess the next question is.. do you wait for it to run out or have it refilled now so it doesn't run out.... hmmm, decisions, decisions..
2 LITRES of LPG weighs 1 KLG or 1 LITRE of LPG weighs 500grams so weigh the bottle, then deduct the gas bottle tare weight and you will know what is left in it.

we had a 907 campingaz cylinder. it lasted 3 seasons. only swapped it last season. but we dont use that much gas.
i was the same as Mr G + Miss E, thinking it would run out during cooking. so i just took it back and swapped it, there was still some gas left in but i wasnt prepared to take the risk of running out on site and not be able to get a refill until the next morning.the bottle we have now should last at least another 2 seasons so i know im safe for now on the running out front.only thing is, i have to wait a long time for the new light weight bottles people keep talking about.
If you google the gas manufacturer, when thier web site comes up you should get the arears of suppliers, type the post code in to where you are going and it should tell you the nearest supplier to there, thats what I do when I am going away.

My van has a 15kg Butane bottle which weighs 30kg when full. I weigh it after each trip and only exchange the bottle when there is less than 2 or 3kg of gas remaining. (The empty bottle weighs 15kg).
