If it's anything like a paraffin greenhouse heater it'll smell and give off smoke.

Thanks for the link Freebird and glad you agree with me on the Alkylate petrol versus Coleman fuel issue, there are still folk who use unleaded petrol and that's pretty nasty stuff to use as a stove fuel. I understand that the really expensive single burner stoves like the Primus' Omnifuel at >£100 will pretty much run on anything including diesel and aviation fuel, but that's for folk trekking in the middle of nowhere where they have to use what they can lay their hands on for fuel. Sure, they will work on diesel etc., but the stink and mess are awful!

Picking up on daveyhairbear's point, you're likely to get a bit of paraffin odour with your heater but I guess it's not like you're going to use it in a confined, totally enclosed space. I don't think smoke will be an issue though; from what I remember of paraffin lamps and heaters they only smoke if you have the wick turned up too high.

parrafin stoves definatly exist, we have a fairly modern backpacking one that runs on parrafin or petrol.

infact dont Trangias use parrafin?

Changing the thread slightly i know but can anyone tell me what Alkylate petrol is and where to get it? We use a coleman Northstar lantern that i only use coleman fuel in because of the threads that i have read about on unleaded fuel and it cost a fortune. Just wondering about useing this fuel in it.
