Two very important points, no, I tell a lie, three
1. It will only work well, whether it's running on gas or electric, if it's level; check with a spirit level just to make sure, although if you have it on a flat floor at home it should be level.
2. If it's still a bit 'iffy' on gas or electric try turning it upside down for a few hours and then back up the right way, allow to settle for half hour or so and try your tests again.
3. If it really is just on gas (and the unit is perfectly level, coz that can affect where the flame hits), then maybe you have an insect that's crawled into (and probably dead by now) the 'bunsen' (the bit where the gas jet meets air just behind the burner). Try cleaning that out with a pipe cleaner.
Can't think of anything else... let's know how you get on. By the way I run ours on BP Gas Light and it's fine.
------------- Please do not adjust your mind... there is a fault in reality
