Rustyfrog - I do sympathise.

I was bitten on the foot a couple of weeks ago by one of these European Wasps that are at least twice the size of a domestic wasp and pack a hell of a punch. I couldn't wear a shoe for four days and the effects lasted for around 10 days. I don't think they have got up to Bolton yet, they are supposed to be only in the south east, but you have been warned.

So, you'll need some heavy artillery when they finally get to you and my fear is that our puppy will try and swallow one, which could be fatal.

They would have to wear flat caps and clogs before they would be allowed up here.

I remember the last time we went to France camping we were visited nightly by hornets.
Now they are frightening!

Word of warning

My MIL used one of these UV jobbies last year in the awning and it was a nightmare, it seemed as though every flying bug thing in a 10m mile radius was attracted to the bright light and we were inundated

Things calmed down when we switched the darn thing off

We have a portable hanging up jobby which plugs into the mains. Whilst it is good and kills the bugs they do of course have to fly into it! We add a little fly spray in the evenings to the awning and always keep the mossie nets down on the van day and night. We have just come back fro a week in Loch Lomond and not one bug in the van or bitten by a mozzie!

Why not just some citronella candles, to put them off and then one of the electronic tennis bat swatters for the brave ones, that way you are not attracting them with the UV light and not killing off the good ones like ladybirds etc.
