I have recently fixed up an old trailer and was about to get a towbar fitted when it dawned on me that i have no chassis plate on the trailer stating unladen weight etc, am i legal to tow without one or am i risking licence and a massive fine?
my erde 122 is plated as maximum of 400kg and the axle and wheels are designed to carry 400kg...the trailer weighs 65kg unladen meaning i can load 335kg of kit in there

i think you can still add a sticker etc to the trailer if you can find out its designed gross weight...for instance the wheel and tyre size on my erde 122 is 480x8" so i know these will take the 400kg gross weight spread accross the two wheels, you just need to find out what your axles are designed to carry...towsure do the plated weight stickers..
Excellent, will these be legal though because i could make up any number if i wanted to? i thought it would have to be a proper stamped i.d plate like a car?
The regulations came in a few years ago, but as with all of these safty things they do not stop you using old kit. You will need to check the max permissable weight for the trailer, you should be able to find this out from looking at the suspension units. Check with the manufacturers web sites to see what type they are. Get the trailer weighed & take this number away from the load allowed on the suspension. That gives you the amount of load you can carry.
i dont think it applies to old trailers. I have had one for years and its a home made one with no plate, i have rebuilt the body completeley once, its on a moggie 1000 axle and I have carried 10cwt of ballast in it once, cost me £60 and still going strong. Why worry?
I believe it doesn't apply to old trailers. I haven't looked again now, but I did some research on my old one, which satisfied me that it wasn't needed. Mine was 1970's.
Cheers
