Wont that just end up with twice as many knots ?
Nope, just half the ammount of winding. if you wind in a figure of 8 around a board you'll get no snags at all (but the cable will take up a bit more space).
I've just bought a reel too. On our last trip our electrics melted in the site socket, luckily no damage was done to the van (or site - just tripped the whole place ). We spoke to an electrician friend who inspected the cable and said that it was damaged beyond repair by us winding it around our arms - lesson learnt! New hook up and shiny red reel ready for the next trip!

Not too tight a curve, just like all the "flat" ones you see in camping shops & garden centres for lawnmowers.
Some of those aren't suitable though, The power cable for a mower (and the cheap leads off ebay) are only 1.5mm and 6mm overall so will take the turn on the flat plastic holders whereas a proper EHU lead is 2.5mm and 11mm overall.

Hi All.
I've used a covenantal wind up reel, replaced the original cable with orange 16amp hook up lead and change the 13amp socket with a round 3 pin garage socket, that way if the cables wet and muddy you don’t get filthy.
Cheers Big Trev.

I agree its one they sell for that purpose but its a universal one for thinner cable that is why it has the 3 pin plug reciever built in, the turns on it are tight so will cause internal damage if wound tightly as others have already mentioned happening to them in this thread, The problem is because you cant see the damage as it gets worse and then will burn out under load.
Ask towsure if they recommend this for caravan ehu leads if you speak to customer services and they recommend the cable drum (which is also cheaper) as the one above "can put strain on the proper EHU orange cables" and is for lighter cable.

see that towsure thingy I made one up from 2" by 1" timber and loosely wind the cable round it, it is round round the 2" bit. cost me zilch as I had the timber lying around as offcuts and took all of 10 minutes to make
I asked a chap who works as a welder in an engineering works to get me one of the reels they have welding wire on, it takes a 25 metre EHU cable just right. I unwind it fully on site & lay the cable round the pitch to stop it heating up & to stop some sticky fingered toad from nicking my reel. I certainly wouldn't pay for one when engineering places throw them away.
We bought one of the reels this year but havent managed to get it wound onto it neatly yet, I try every time we pack up and end up winding it round my arm! Am glad I read the post though cos didnt realise we'd need to unwind it to stop it overheating.
