We have a Waeco CAB40 3 way fridge which we have had since 2006.  We have only used it a few times camping but have used it mainly as a back-up for the conventional fridge in the kitchen.

A few months ago, the fridge stopped working.  I tried the turning upside down procedure a few times but to no avail.  The heating element was working and so was the thermostat.  Now yesterday (Friday the 13th!), it looks like the refridgerant has leaked out because there is a strong smell of ammonia coming from the back of it.  I find this a bit strange as the the fridge has always been carefully handled.

As this fridge looks like a scrapper, can you recommend a 3 way fridge that is suitable for camping and also being able to be used for long periods as a secondary fridge in the kitchen?

Hmm this won't help you but I'd go for a Waeco 3 way fridge! We have our original one that we bought in 2005 (blue Combicool) which is in Dad's living room as a drinks fridge and the grey newer model which I think we bought in 2007 which has been running in our dining room for at least the last year. Both have done numerous trips to France and UK trips.

I'm surprised you've had trouble with yours and I wonder if it's worth you contacting them? We had a dodgy door on our blue model, I emailed them (following a thread on here) and they sent us a new door FOC by return - I was impressed with their customer service. I'll have a dig and see if I can find the email.

How did you transport it? We put ours in our trailer once but never again as it got so shaken up I think it would have been destroyed fairly quickly.

Second post...it was Mark Horner <MHorner at waeco.co.uk> that I emailed and he sorted the door with no problems.

I just noticed it is one of the Towsure ones.  It is the blue case with the grey lid.

Thanks for the suggestion over contacting someone over it, that sounds like a good idea.

I only carried the fridge in the back of the car, never in a trailer.

I'd be very tempted to email them and see what they say. I think you're right to be disappointed by yours and they might help you out in some way if it is a Waeco one.

Yes, contact them. I doubt you'll get a replacement out of them after this time but they might offer to repair it, or give you a discount off a new one?

All I can offer is that I am more than happy with my Dometic (formerly Electrolux) 1600.
