Right now we've got 2 single burner stoves but we are wanting to get a double burner and gas bottle.

I have no idea about gas bottles except that Calor Gas is more widely available. Will all stoves run on Calor Gas? How much do the gas bottles cost?

Which are the best, but also cheap-ish, stoves around? Do we need a grill?

Add anything else i need to know.

Thanks

We have the Campingaz Camping Chef Double Burner and Grill like this one:

We run it off a Calor 4.5 butane bottle which will be OK for any table top stove that is designed to run from a cylinder

This is a Campingaz 907 butane cylinder

It holds 2.7 Kg of gas and, once you have an empty cylinder you may exchange it for a full one at an average cost of £17.50, it connects to your cooker via a regulator and a rubber hose like this:

95

Calor also sell butane gas which you can use with your cooker, the equivalant size is slightly larger being a Calor 4.5 Kg which exchanges for around £12  empty for full:

These need a different regulator like this:

Regulators in both cases are around £5

Personally i prefer the Calor 4.5 Kg because they are easier sourced and you get almost twice the gas for less money, a 4.5 Kg usually lasts us a season and more

There is a deposit to pay in both cases for the cylinder, i think Calor charge £30 but i stand to be corrected, better that you beg steel or borrow an empty from elsewhere, local free ads or the council tip, Area Recycling Facility, are popular sources

Or you can use cheaper gas from the Flo gas group - see here:

http://www.flogas.co.uk/brands/

They come in similar sizes to Calor, but the regulators are different for some sizes.

Unless you are thinking of camping in very cold weather, butane will be fine. If you wanted to camp in winter then propane would be better, but it is more expensive.

Thanks for the replies

Very informative Caster thanks that has really helped, we'll have an ask around to see if anyone has an empty bottle we could have.

I keep looking at that stove in Go Outdoors. It's got more expensive again recently but it is in the sale there all the time, i'll keep an eye out for it been reduced again.

I also wanted to ask about storing the gas. Where do you store them? Is a shed ok?

Yep, our cylinder lives in the shed when not in use

To be honest we use the stove shown simply because we already own it but i wouldn't buy the same one again because the grill is pretty damn useless at making toast, i would consider this one while it's at that price

And get one of these for your toast

Forgot to say, you can still run it off Calor, no need to buy Campingaz, it's all butane, unless you are going to camp in freezing cold weather when Propane (red cylinder) would be more appropriate

Thanks was wondering about that.

I have 1 last (stupid) question.

I have got a 7kg calor gas bottle from freecycle, not sure if its butane or propane, but am i right in thinking i can take it to a calor gas shop and swap it for a smaller one? And if it is a propane one can i swap it for a smaller butane one?

Yes you can simply exchange, though I am not sure whether you can swap gas - that may be down to the individual supplier. You know which gas it is by the colour of the bottle: blue = butane, red = propane. You need a different regulator for each.
