We have just purchased out first family tent (Royal Biarritz 6) after much research and debate. We are now onto the next hot camping topic - choosing the best sleeping bags for our expeditions. We are South African, and pretty susceptible to the English cold! Please could you offer us some advice on the best Children's Sleeping Bag for camping. We have researched on the different Season Ratings and thought perhaps the Season 3 would be best, however there doesn't seem to be many of these on the market for kids.

take a good adult bag and tie it off half way down to prevent them from getting smoothered and you have solved one problem of finding kids bags!

Hiya, I have the outwell kids bags and they are 3 season. You can get matching chairs and things as well just don't buy the airbeds!

Can highly recommend the Vango Nitestar range. You can get baby, junior or adult sizes. With hindsight, I'd go for an adult one and tie it off part way then it 'grows' with your child and you don't have to buy a new one as they get bigger.

Both my kids are snug and warm in their Vango Nitestar Juniors. Depending on size of child, for a 7 (ish) + I'd probably be tempted to go for the adult size. My nearly 8 year old fits his well but doesn't have that many more seasons in it. My 4 year old has lots of growing room in his Junior but the smaller one would be far too tiny,

I know the junior bags they're in are probably thinner than my Womens Nitestar 350, but the kids are always warmer than me LOL Sure I think that fit is also important for warmth, not just how thick or type of filling. If I put my 4 year old in an adult bag and then the hood wouldn't fit so well, they'd be much more space around his body etc

Get an adult one. My youngest was fine from the age of 3.

Wow, thank you for the super advice. I think we may end up opting for the adult Vango's and tying them off at the bottom. My kids tend to have growth spurts, so it would probably be a good idea to be able to lengthen the bags as they grow. I am thrilled to see that we are not the only ones camping with young children - I was a bit worried that we might be trying to get them camping too young. Looking forward to it already...

We're looking at kids sleeping bags too. They're not as clearly graded as the adult bags because they can't test them with the same criteria due to their size.

If you want something cheaper than an adult bag, have a look at the Decathlon / Quechua site. They do kids bags (up to 140cm height) at various ratings, we're heading for the S10 Juniors priced at a reasonable £15 which are good two season bags.

From my investigations a kids bag with 200gsm or lower is a one season bag (e.g. Quechua S20 or Coleman Pacific) and 250gsm or above is a warmer two season bag (e.g. Quechua S10 or Vango Nitestar midi). A lot depends on the quality of the hollow fibre used though. And I'm sure a mummy style bag is warmer than a standard rectangle shape.

The Amazon site has a good selection and is worth perusing.

We got the outwell convertable, its got a zip on it that you unzip when your kids get bigger. Our 2.5 year old is very comfy sleeping in it. We got it when she outgrew her nitestar.

We have had the vangos cost about 18 quid each very good, but most important is to make sure whatever you get they keep warm...
